I'll admit that Daredevil's blindness is a tough balancing act, but Daredevil jumps from building to building catching flag poles in mid-air. He not only catches objects, he can deflect bullets with his billy club. Saying those things made him seem like he wasn't blind is hardly fair.
Yes, Daredevil can do these things but Matt Murdock is supposed to be posing as a blind person. If his secret identity is blind, he should act blind.

And how would balancing on see-saws be a discrediting factor?
You're talking about a character who climbs fire escapes, jumps across rooftops and swings off flag poles.

I'm not seeing your bullshit reasoning here at all for Affleck's performance.
The scene I'm talking about was when Matt (out of uniform) is sparring with Electra on the playground. There's a scene where he jumps onto a seesaw (out of uniform) still posing as a blind person. If I saw that, I'd assume he was pretending to be blind just so he could get good parking or something.

Edit: I found the scene though it has commentary. Tell me this guy could pass for blind-

OK, I missed that. However, I do think it's similar to how Frank Miller handled her introduction in the Man Without Fear storyline (not technically canon but very influential and, obviously, he invented Elektra). In that one, back in his college days, he's running and jumping from building to building doing acrobatics late at night and she essentially teases him to have him give chase. Obviously, Matt has to downplay his abilities when there are people who may recognize him, but he doesn't always have to hide himself.

As I understand it, Daredevil isn't *actually* blind.

Sure his eyes don't work but he has a better, more accurate perception of his immediate surroundings that most people with 20/20. That's the crux of his super-power, is it not?
He needs the white cane for the same reason Clark Kent needs glasses, it's a disguise. So any claim that Affleck is unconvincing as a blind person isn't really much of a criticism. It's like saying an actor playing Bruce Wayne isn't playing a "good" rich moron playboy....because he's not really supposed to be.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't say it's more accurate, just different. It's certainly 360 and can seemingly go around corners, etc. I also think he's better at detecting motion. But when it comes to details or depth or anything like that, it's not there.

Here is a good article from someone with clearly too much time on their ha- I mean someone who has thought this out in lots of helpful detail

Daredevil certainly is blind. I strongly dislike any version that tries to say his sight is better. In fact, Daredevil today is at a greater disadvantage than in the past. D.G. Chichester's nonsensical and misguided attempts aside, the easiest example is this: Matt Murdock can't read what's on a computer screen. He can't really tell what's in photographs. In things like this, he's genuinely blind.

BTW, this is the thread previously used for Daredevil discussion. I don't want to get it lost.
Ah, thank you! I'd forgotten about that thread. Like I said, it was late and I was tired.

Should I repost the link over there?

That was my point in mentioning it, the picture of the new Matt Murdock seems to be blind, although it's hard to tell from a still.

Yes, Daredevil can do those things, but, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer that isn't some kind of Kung Fu blind master in his spare time. I would never have belived Murdock was blind in that movie, even before Electra showed up.

Daredevil's radar sense is more like a bat or dolphin's radar than sight. He can distinguish objects at a distance, and his hightened hearing and other senses can help fill in details, (he recognizes most people by the sound of their heartbeat, not their appearance) but he can not see colors or like Alidar Jarok just posted, can't see things on a flat surface, like reading a book or looking at a picture. He can't read a regular print law book, for example, but I think I remember him reading braile.

Sure, as I said his eyes don't work and therefore he can't perceive light waves. But the criticism I was responding to is that a certain actor didn't to a good job of portraying a "blind" person. What I'm saying is that when it comes to walking around and talking to people, he's not *effectively* blind and thus the criticism is something of a non sequitur. The white stick and glasses are just props.

I agree with the claims that he needs to act like a regular (but quite competent) blind person when in public and viewed by others (particularly those who know him). But he's been shown to let his guard down when with Elektra, so I don't find that unusual.

I think you're missing the point of the criticism. Yes, Daredevil has radar senses, but his out of uniform secret identity is not supposed to act like he has radar senses. If someone in the real world walks up to you and says he's blind and precedes to do a backflip onto a seesaw, you're not going to believe he's blind.

And my point is there's always been an "Elektra exception" to that rule.

Hmmm. Intriguing essay there on the "radar sense" (which has likely always been an oversimplification of what Matt's added sense does)...
