Explanation for the blade of qutluch?

I was curious to know if there was any cannon explanation for the different shape of the qutluch from "Sins of the Father" in Next Gen. to "Real Life" in Voyager.

Do we need one, any more than I need a canon explanation for my differently shaped kitchen knives?

I googled and it's spelled "Kut'luch", although "qutlich" shows up in a Klingon Empire novel http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Kut'luch

 

You know what I'm tired of? Explaining to people what the word "serrated" means. It seems this word has been dropping out of usage and is seen as overly specific.

So yes KingDaniel we DO need canon to explain your kitchen knives.

 

Wow, you must be kidding -- people don't know what "serrated" is? What is wrong with people; we're ready for the asteroid.

 

I suspect if I told an alien I'm getting a "knife" there are any number of examples I could use. I could use a butter knife one day, a swiss army pocket knife the next or a machete the day after. All of them I'd still use the word "knife" to describe. I would assume the Klingons would have more than one type of "Qutluch" too.

 

It would help if we knew what kut'luch means in Klingonese. Does it mean "ritual blade used in assassinations of Cha'Dich"? Or is it more general - perhaps just "sharp", "serrated", or "long"?

 

It is most definitely not correctly spelled Kut'luch. Dont be stupid.

 

Transliterating words across real human languages with different alphabets is hard enough. Doing it across a fictional alien language....

The correct spelling (iirc) has never appeared on screen, so there is no canon on the matter.

For what it's worth, I personal use "Qut'luch."

 

Yeah the Q's and K's were all over the shop for a long time.

 

Well, like... Jewish people use the Menorah in some of their ceremonies, right? I've seen a lot of differently designed Menorah but they're all called "Menorah."

 

Or perhaps the reason for the difference is that it was a continuity error. A prop mistake etc...

 

As long as a Klingon word is spelled with an unnecessary apostrophe, I'm happy with it.

 

Maybe it's a dialect thing, I mean we've heard about "Northern Klingons" and "Southern Klingons". So maybe there are different spelling for different Klingons and "Kut'luch" is the official word. By the way, what does the Klingon Language Center say about this?
