    Peter David writes the best chapter-ending cliffhangers. Stuff like (I don't have a book in front of me so I'm just making up an example in the PAD-style):

    The ensign turned to Geordi and said, "Well, at least things can't get any worse."

    She was wrong.

    Exactly my feelings. I didn't care if they killed Janeway or not, so that wasn't an issue. It was a badly written book.
    This has always been my least favorite part of Peter David's writing, since it has always been less that subtle, but in the past the strength of the story balanced out any cringes. But in this book the nudges were harder and even less subtle and the writing wasn't enough to balance the load.
    Of course, I have a broader dislike of the relau
