World War Z: B Godfather: A classic that I'd not seen since my late teens, circa early 90's, and not sure I really appreciated it as I should. Probably why when it was lauded I was more MEH on it. I found not only had I forgotten large parts of it but I indeed found the merits of it's praise to be worthy. I've therefore put parts 2&3 in the Netflix queue next. World War Z: A zombie flick that hits the ground running and is tense for the largest part of the film. The ending actually slows the pace down in order to test a hypothesis on how to circumvent the zombies. The ending is a bit open and seems clearly set up to allow for more. The few cliches and open ended ending make me keep it out of A range. Unrelated to my grade I can't believe a couple brought a 5-6mo old infant to the theater for WWZ. Really, REALLY...common sense, courtesy and good judgement have clearly checked out and are missing in action.

I read a review in the Chronicle that said it didn't need the bit about the tribute band by the sons, but I think its part of the story of the band's rebirth. The talkin' heads towards the end seemed random. I mean, really, we need to hear Kid Rock's opinion? Seriously? I went over to the Ritz today for a triple feature. First up, GvstSM, an English-dub of the Japanese monster movie, the first of the "Beasts vs Bots" series Alamo Drafthouse is runnin' this month. The last time I watched a Godzilla movie, it was the restored print of the original Gojira. This one was pretty silly...I mean, seriously, a shapeshiftin' monster made of pollution? And Godzilla winds up defendin' Japan from it...why? Followed that with my first every viewin' of VG, part of the Summer of '83 series that the Drafthouse has had goin' this past month. Dear god, was that movie painfully '80s. And Nicolas Cage looked crazy young in it! And, finally, an almost perfect 35mm print of Scarface, the last movie of the Summer of '83. I overheard one of the programmers talkin' a couple of weeks ago, and he said that the last 35mm print he had seen of the movie was so aged, it had a red tint to it, and was near unwatchable. This print, though, was beautiful. And the movie was bad ass. Added bonus, I got to have a couple of guys kicked out from the theater! I was there to hear Al Pacino as Tony Montana, not that scrawny guy's impersonation of Al Pacino as Tony Montana. First time I've seen that done up close & personal. It was kinda awesome. I wanna do it more often!

Has anyone else seen Monsters University? Are Pixar films no longer interesting because of the whole Cars 2 and Brave (Which I still haven't seen) thing? I wonder what others have thought about this movie, considering Monsters Inc was well liked. Kind of surprised I'm the only one (At least in this thread) that's seen it.
The Incredibles is the only Pixar movie I've seen and I did like it, but animated movies don't generally interest me. I do want to see Up and Wall-E though, the latter because I want to compare it with Oblivion.
^ Its on my list to see, just haven't gotten to it yet. I enjoyed Brave quite a bit, but hate both Cars movies, the sequel was worse than the first.

Thirty movies in June! Averaged out, one "new to me" movie a day! Went out to Alamo Slaughter last night for a couple of movies. First up, the Napster doctumentary Downloaded directed by Alex Winter, who was there in attendence to introduce the movie & participate in a Q&A afterward. I admit, I didn't use Napster, I didn't see the point to downloadin' music onto a computer then, and I still don't now, when the radio is free and right freakin' there to use. But, I also understand why folks would use that system, and others like it over the years. The documentary put a human face to the whole piracy issue, and it was informative with a balanced look at both sides of what was happenin'. Alex Winter was wrappin' up a ten city tour of the movie, and commented that Slaughter was the nicest of the ten theaters, which was good to know. In his introduction, he said that he started workin' on a dramatized narrative of the Napster story back in '03 or '04, and decided it needed to be a documentary, instead, which he has worked on for quite some time. In the Q&A afterward, I got to ask the second question, which was if he would still put out the dramatized narrative as a companion piece to the documentary, and mentioned the success of The Social Network and its dramatization of the creation of Facebook. Alex Winter's answer was, "No, not by me, no. That movie will never be made, and I hope that after all these guys have been through, everyone else just leaves them alone." The host made a comment about how, "Yeah, now that you have your movie, right?" Alex Winter went on to say, "Besides, who would be the douche they get to play Sean Parker this time? Justin Beiber?" Still, a movie well worth watchin', and, as it turns out, ya can buy or rent it to watch online through Amazon.com. After the Q&A, I got Alex Winter to sign my movie ticket. Followed the documentary up with the stupid stoner comedy This is the End which has Seth Rogan, Jay Burachel, Danny McBride, James Franco, Craig Robinson, & a bunch of other celebrities playin' hyperinsane versions of themselves durin' the Apocalypse. It was actually pretty damn funny, especially Emma Watson & Michael Cera's situations. If I wake up in time, next movie to see will be Much Ado About Nothing.
The Lone Ranger I believe it has plot holes, and I don't know if I missed something or did Lone Ranger become the master of acrobatics out of nowhere, when previously he didn't seem particularly agile. However it was more of a battle of values that was the focus of the story, hilariously civilized for a big action movie, so nitpicks about believable physics which there weren't in the first place become insignificant. Combine that with, for these days exceptionally rich presentation in both amount, quality and arrangement of content, and there's no contest between my favourite summer blockbuster.

Much Ado About Nothing: A- The Joss Whedon directed, nearly all Whedon alum acted telling of The Bards famous play shot in 12 days was lots of fun. It's showing at our Indie Cinema in town as of last week and the runs there are short usually, so I made haste. I admit it's probably more fun if you're a vested fan of Whedon and his stalwart regulars. If you aren't familiar with the story I think a fair boilerplate is convincing two people to open up and embrace the passion they have for each other. They have to be tricked into admitting it and all the while a nefarious villain is running afoul of things trying to further his own needs at the expense of others. That said, if you just like Shakespeare and find appreciation in modern updated settings of his tales then this is a fun movie. Also, not that it mattered to me, but it is all in B&W. I actually felt that added a touch of novelty to the film.

Go me! I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, mostly 'cause of the cast, made up almost entirely of Whedonverse alumni. The dialogue was a bit difficult to follow, since its ye olde school English, but still worth watchin'. After my shift, I got into the second showin' of the new Tonto movie with my friend Galena. We both were entertained by the western-ish comedy, and I'll be goin' again, for sure, since I missed a brief bit towards the end, thanks to the need for a potty break. Went into work early yesterday, and I was able to get a ticket for DM2 in 3D. The minions crack me right the hell up, and they are featured more prominently in this one than the first one. I'm not even gonna try for a movie today, but I still haven't seen World War Z or Monsters University.... And the Ritz has two comin' up this weekend, a James Gandolfini memorial screenin' of The Man Who Wasn't There on Friday, and Yankee Doodle Dandy as the "Broadway Brunch" film Saturday & Sunday.

The Lone Ranger: C+ Such potential wasted here. A chance to really showcase a character that is likely largely unknown to the anyone born after 1990. It's too long, the hero is weakling with little spine for what Frontier Justice needs. I had trouble seeing him as a hero. Tonto was played for laughs largely, not 3 Stooges type slapstick mind you, it was dry and sardonic but the issue is Tonto is a warrior, crafty, cunning---we didn't get that. A good 20-25min needed to be trimmed, especially in the second act. I neither hated it nor loved. Some action sequences were worth watching. Fichtner's bad guy Cavendish is easily the best performance in the whole film.
A Serbian Film Carries a reputation of being the eldritch abomination of violent movies. I seeked it for its promise to be most affecting hyperrealistic portrayal of wide-scale agony, in my continuing interest in attaining a firmer understanding of such matters. It's construction is devious, cinematography so unrelentingly gripping that you will be pulled in, whether you like it or not. Watch it alone uninterrupted and you will feel burning agitation, and numb uncertainty continuing hours on end after the movie. There are vague societal allusions, but the main focus is on more fundamental psychology of violence.
