The Bling Ring (B) On some level, making a movie about the title characters of this movie strikes me as the least healthy thing for them, even if said movie ultimately depicts them as (for the most part) immature, painfully shallow druggies. Marc is the only one with any suggestion of depth (if this wasn't made by a female filmmaker, I'm sure somebody would have criticized the male character being the only one). Marc and Rebecca are the focus of the robbery phase, but once they get caught the focus largely shifts to Emma Watson's hilariously vapid Nikki -- if she was a wholly fictional creation, people would find her implausible. Started with TGC...which wasn't very good. Murphy is a private investigator who looks for lost children who gets drafted into helpin' find a perfect monk preteenager that agents of the devil are tryin' to corrupt. 48H was alright, for an early '80s buddy cop-ish comedy. A48H wasn't as good, though. SA was a horrible spoof of found footage / supernatural reality tv programmin'. I don't think I laughed once while watchin' it. Been watchin' the first season of Warehouse 13 the last couple of days...

Why is it getting a B+? It had horrible pacing. It seemed at times like it was trying to be No Country For Old Men, trying to do these nice long artistic shots. But the sets were dull and not fun to look at, so I didn't find the need the linger on them. I also had a hard time taking Jake Gyllenhaal seriously as this rogue cop with plenty of tattoos. Just wasn't the character for him.
Monsters University ★★★½ Just as funny as the original. I also really enjoyed the soundtrack. I'm normally not a big fan of animated sequels/prequels, but this was obviously a labor of love. After Earth ★ I had to see how bad it really was. It's terrible. There's literally nothing interesting about this film. The East ★★★★ Brit Marling is a genius. Having loved Another Earth and The Sound of My Voice, I had really high expectations for this movie, and I wasn't disappointed. Just as atmospheric and suspenseful as the last two films she's written and starred in, but just a lot more mainstream. Highly recommended.

The movie was cute, but not really funny. The stuff that got the biggest laughs in the theater was stuff that was in the trailer, so it wasn't as funny seein' it the second or third time (I've seen the trailer a couple of times already). Kevin Kline got some good jokes in, though. Kinda clever, but not laugh out loud awesome. And a light hair color for Michael Douglas is not a good thing at all, made him look old & washed out. Went to my old Alamo Drafthouse this mornin' to check in with my former boss, let him know I'm still alive and trying to get back to Austin. He wasn't in, but the counter guy remembered me and gave me an employee ticket for Don Jon. That one was freakin' awesome. Direct, honest, and almost brutal. Well worth checkin' out and I'm glad I finally got in to see it! Wish I could just spend the day at the Drafthouse like I used to when I worked for 'em, but I can't... Next movie I watch will be on Netflix Instant again.

Zodiac (B+) Rather like the anti-Se7en, David Fincher's account of the hunt for the Zodiac Killer in his boyhood California of the 1960s-1970s. All-around competently made, and the decision to depict a story that has no real "resolution" is a bold one, from a story perspective; at the same time, once the tensions have died down, the movie begins frantically leaping through the late 70s and early 80s, closing with a single moment in 1991, and while these segments include strong moments, it some respects it feels a bit like a highlight reel. The main character arc, such as it is, is Jake Gyllenhaal's obsession with the case, and, surprisingly given the presence of Fincher, I don't think it ever quite comes across on screen like the movie wants it to. 73. Romeo + Juliet (A) Or William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, to use its full title. I think this movie represented the peak of Baz Luhrmann's career to this point -- his madcap visual style is on full display, but it's married to a much stronger story than Moulin Rouge, thanks to the work of acclaimed screenwriter William Shakespeare. He's also aided by two excellent lead performances from two of the 1990s' best young actors -- at almost two decades' remove, it's interesting to see how DiCaprio continued on from here into film stardom, while Danes, the odd foray aside, seems largely to be defined by her TV roles. Supergirl: Hadn't seen this since the early 90's on VHS and finally decided to give it a rewatch. Maybe it was the era and being caught up in the Reeves films and coming of Burton's Batman but I recalled my teen self thinking this was decent. It really isn't, it's very bad. Sometimes one should just allow a memory to remain as it was. Escape Plan: This was exactly what I thought it would be and it delivered. It doesn't try to be anything more really and because of the simplicity and adherence to that they made a good film. Even tossed in a bit of twist and it's too bad that many are going to pass on the film. I'll honestly say there aren't any sequences that scream "must see on the big screen"(which is usually a leading factor among a few for me), it's at least matinee worthy if you got the time. I saw this for the guilty pleasure of being a fan of both stars. Prisoners: Again, while not big screen must see this film is a tense, tight, emotional drama that weaves together a disturbing narrative through various angles over it's 2.5hrs with some surprises in the plot as well. At the least Hugh Jackman should get nominated come February. Disappearance of Alice Creed: This is at it's core essentially a 3 man play with only a few sets. It's fairly easy to see where it's going by the end of the first act. Although one moment in the second act did catch me by surprise. The films title, imo, takes on a dual role as well by the time we end the story. It's 3yrs old but I'll spoiler it just in case Spoiler: title dual meaning, imo So Alice is kidnapped, disappeared, by her boyfriend(Danny) and his random partner(Vig). He was his partner in a few ways, was it genuine, who knows. Alice's father, a filthy rich bastard, has just cut Alice out of any inheritance so Danny does the kidnapping to extort money...for them he tells her. By stories end Danny & Vig are both dead and Alice has a determined look on her face as she drives off with the $2m pounds(euro?) that was her ransom. I think she now intentionally disappears as a fuck you to daddy.

Pacific Rim - On Demand - I wanted to like this, even before seeing this. I own the movie RoboJox on VHS, which I transferred to DVD just to have. I love big giant robot stuff, my fondest memories from childhood is of Voltron. Yet this movie did almost nothing for me. It wasn't as bad as transformers but at least their was some excitement to those movies. This movie seamed like all the actors were sleepwalking through their parts. The fight scenes between the Kaiju and Jaegers were always presented at night with rain, like they were trying to hide the CGI. The fights themselves were ho-hum and boring, did people actually go crazy for this movie? All the characters in this movie are caricature, barely two-dimensional. The must have literally taken out 1000 other scripts and copy and paste the bear minimum of dialog to make up this script. But the worse fucking this of all was the character of Dr. Newton Geiszler played by Charlie Day. I was like, I recognize this guy but can't remember from where. They I realized where I saw him, Horrible Bosses. He was the worse thing about Horrible Bosses and he drags this movie down so far, he is like the black hole of acting. Him trying to be funny is screaming at an octave that only dogs can hear at. I really wish they would stop giving him roles, they are taking them away from other high pitched comedians who need work and who are actually funny.

Caught grief for it from my sister and the younger nephew, too. I'd say The Invisible Man was my favorite, though Dracula was pretty good, too. There was too much build up in The Bride of Frankenstein for very little payoff. And the costume continuity for The Wolf Man threw me off... My brother in law picked The Sand Pebbles, an old Steve McQueen movie directed by Robert Wise. I rather liked it, though I don't think I'd sit through it again any time soon. V/H/S & V/H/S 2 were both dumb found footage horror anthology movies. The first makes ya wonder why anyone would convert a Skype session to VHS. The second makes ya wonder why anyone would keep callin' their dog durin' an alien invasion, other than because the camera is on its collar. Watched the sixth Halloween movie last night, just 'cause its there and is the only one of the franchise on Netflix. I've seen the first three, so I'm not sure when they introduced the idea that Michael Myers was a Druid-sponsored demon, but it seemed like a bad idea to me. And Paul Rudd is creepy for creepiness sake JJ was a fairly decent documentary about Star Wars fans & their obsessions. Watchin' the first Pumpkinhead now...again, 'cause its there, and this is the time of year for horror movies.

The Wolverine ★★1/2 Wow... this was a real disappointment of a movie. I never really felt immersed in Japan or felt any connection with any character other than Logan. Maybe it needs a rewatch, but I don't think think it's much better than Wolverine: Origins, and that's sad.

My Halloween Quadruple Feature Pumpkinhead ★★ The creature effects are great, but it's a little too slow for my tastes. C.H.U.D. ★ It's as bad as the title indicates. Something about sewer monsters and homeless and toxic waste. Pet Sematary ★★★ I apparently didn't really know what Pet Sematary was about. It was a lot better than I expected. Denise Crosby is in it wearing some horrible pantsuits. That was entertaining by itself. I Spit On Your Grave ★★ The 70's version. It's very much an exploitation film. I expected the revenge portion to be most of the movie, but it's almost like an afterthought to an hour and 15 minutes of chasing and raping.
Cloud Atlas - HBO go on Apple TV - I had to watch this over three days to finally finish it, which makes it unfair to then review it. So I'm going to re-watch it at some point in one sitting. I also plan on reading the book, to see if it helps to understand the movie a bit better.
