Since when does Twilight count as urban fantasy? That takes place mostly in extremely rural Washington. My personal favourite in the genre, though I haven't read a lot of it, is probably Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I don't think I've ever read a book that takes advantage of its urban setting quite so much as that one. Though Mark Millar's The Good Fairies of New York, which I recently read for the first time, does come close. However, I didn't find the plot as engaging as Gaiman's work.
I like Patricia Briggs, Jennifer Estep, Faith Hunter, Marjorie Liu, C.E. Murphy, Rob Thurman, Karen Marie Moning, Kalayna Price, Kat Richardson, Phaedra Weldon, S.L.Wright.... and several others. I probably read more Urban Fantasy than any other genre now. I used to read mainstream mysteries but they got to be the same thing over and over.
velocity very cool avatar love zim !! also twilight could be vampire romance then . also thanks for the author list . as far as neverwhere did you catch the bbc television series ? currently reading laurell k hamilton's bloody bones currently watching season 5 of supernatural went to the dollars movies saw harry potter deathly hollows and season of the witch . Looking forward to RED RIDING HOOD .
I'm glad someone brought up Laurel K. Hamilton. Anita Blake blows "Twilight" and "True Blood" out of the water and she deserves her own show or movie.
Another good one, if you can find it, is The Wizard of Pigeons by Megan Lindholm (aka "Robin Hobb). I have a special fondness for that one since it's set in downtown Seattle. Timothy: You'd probably also like Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty Norville" series, which involves a female werewolf with her own radio show.
Since timothy doesn't seem to be very far along in the series... Spoiler: Anita Blake series I enjoyed the early Anita Blake stories. I lost interest when it seemed to become all about sex. I realize that's a big draw for the female readers, but I enjoyed the earlier cases more.
I just checked my nook mr.cox she's on there well at seven of them are . Also , later this year looking forward to reading simon R green . I would love to see a anita blake movie maybe played be nana visitor .
Tim Powers is great, but I'm not sure I think of him as urban fantasy. Books like The Anubis Gates and On Stranger Tides are more gonzo historical fantasy . . . . Here's hoping the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie makes him a household name!
Amen to that.. I was thinking of the Last Call/Expiration Date/Earthquake Weather series, not the historical ones.
Good point. I admit I've fallen behind in my Powers reading. I'm mostly familar with his early historical fantasies like The Stress of Her Regard . . . .
Actually I've envisioned former "24" star Reiko Aylesworth for Anita Blake for some reason or perhaps Michelle Rodriguez.
They're set in Las Vegas and California in the 1980s... excellent books, the first two seem standalone until the third one combines their plotlines.
If I had ever seen Michelle Rodriguez play a character whose first trait wasn't angry, I might agree with you. I thought Erica Cerra would make a good Anita.
