Damon Lindelof has taken a bit of heat lately for the Alice Eve underwear scene and now he has responded to the criticism. The scene in question was heavily featured in ad spots promoting the movie. The Eve scene really didn’t seem to serve a purpose in the movie other than showing a woman in [...]

That's basically just the result of how those guys make their films. Insert that shot because it looks cool, insert that shot because it looks hot, insert that shot because it looks awesome. And IF you're lucky, you can somehow explain it, but it's not important at all. Most stuff is pointless and has no real intent.

When are they going to get the sex out of Star Trek and do a good story fit for the entire family. Probably never because women in underwear and sex sells, always will.

 I'd be more concerned about my kids seeing a head being crushed than a woman in her underwear.

If it was a topless hunk scene would anyone be complaining?

They just showed a scream. The rest is up to your imagination.

Hopefully, never! "Family" movies are boring movies for boring families. If you are concerned about kids, watch out for the glorification of mindless violence, not for a woman wearing a bikini.

Little kids are pretty perceptive and imaginative. They aren't dumb.

I'd rather my kids see Alice Eve completely butt naked than what Khan did to Admiral Marcus.

That will include the original series, which had it's fair share of scantily clad men and women, as well as deliciously wholesome violence, which means you're going to have to complain to Gene Roddenberry. Unfortunately, he's out of the country at the moment.

I can't believe this is controversial. Broadcast television shows more skin in prime time.

It's not like they're showing Dennis Franz' bare ass onscreen. That was something to bitch about.

The scene didnt bother me, she was changing into a flightsuit and Kirk couldnt resist having a look... What didnt make sense is you can see they are wearing their gold/red/blue uniforms under the flightsuits so she must have been taking of the dress to put on a shirt/tunic and trousers which is a bit odd...

She was supposed to wear her dress under her flightsuit? It would ride up with every step.

Yeah, but that's the thing. In this movie we didn't get that balance. Last movie, it was Uhura and Kirk (and Gaila) that were in their undies. This movie only showcases Eve's character, and she's posed in such a way that makes it look like she hoped Kirk would turn around and take a picture. :cardie: Anyway, I guess a shot of a lean, topless, Spock was too much to hope for, lol.

Shouldn't male and female nipple exposure be equal these days?

Kirk was in his underwear in Into Darkness. And if you wanted a lean, topless Spock well... you'd have to get a different actor.

    Women's Body Images and Media

This type of scene not only degrades women, but sets an unrealistic ideal for every woman to attempt to obtain. There are studies that exposure to the unhealthy images causes long-term effects on the overall health of the body image of women.

Star Trek is supposed to show a progressive universe. And being that it has never treated women in that progressive fashion, it would be nice if we had women showed as more than sexual objects to be obtained by James Kirk. This scene is gratuitous simply because it does not move the story along. It is meant to titillate and sell the movie and little else. This is a 180 million dollar movie. Not a scene should be wasted towards making this the best film possible. It is hard to take the rest of the movie seriously when it devotes time to this.

    Re: Lindelof On Eve Scene

That's exactly what I was thinking earlier on when someone mentioned that scene in another thread. No one complained about Daniel Craig's ocean scene in Casino Royale, or Kirk's underwear scene in Trek '09, or Hemsworth's scene in Thor.

But a woman in underwear ? Oh, that's objectifying and sexist and will anybody think of the children ?

I saw breasts in 80s action movies when I was 7 and that never bothered me. In fact I didn't even notice.
