Was Timeless the best Harry Kim episode better?

You ever been back stage at a Stones concert?

Groupies are supposed to be passed around.

Kim had a right to be bitter.

Chakotay was bogarting the groupie.

 

Kim really does have that drummer personality type. Forgotten. Will probably die in a pool of his own vomit.

 

Kim wishes he was the drummer.

That frakk plays the tambourine.

 

Maybe she got hit by a truck while crossing the street to see what her boyfriend and his 2 buddies were all excited about.

 

And now she wants to not be hit by the truck? Which had something to do with VOY's failure? She must have some invisible wounds as she looked pretty good.

 

So.. chokes to death on chiclets?

But did Edith really cross the street to see what Our Heroes were excited about? I don't remember it that way. But clearly I remember less and less. My Trek knowledge is just draining away

 

Yeah, Kirk first walks her across the street as she talks about a Clark Gable movie. He doesn't recognize the name and she says "You know, Dr. McCoy said the same thing." Kirk reacts to McCoy's name, tells her to stay there, runs back to the mission calling for Spock. McCoys comes out of the mission and they embrace. Then Edith decides to see what's going on and enters the street.

And it's 2:30am here, so that's probably why the joke didn't work. Catch you later.And I've watched the episode several times over the past 2 weeks.

 

Jim's sexy was so glaring that it muffled oncoming traffic.

I used to have my trek encyclopaedia chained to my pc.

Now I really don't care how wrong I am and frankly it gives the anal retentives something to wet their lips with.

It's 10.34 pm here and the joke worked fine.

 

It was a beautiful joke.

I'm crying now, City on the Edge of Forever is my most watched episode and yet somehow I missed all this or forgot all this or blanked it out. My failures.. lost in time. Like tears in rain. That was from Lights of Zetar, yes yes it was. Goddamnit.

 

The Clark Gable reference always bothered me, because Gable was not a big star in 1930. But Gary Cooper was, with a big hit in the title role of 1929's The Virginian.

Originally they were going to use Richard Dix, but they feared no one would remember Dix's career.

 

Dick Dix?

His parents were morons.

 

Dix's real name was Ernest (or Ernst) Carlton Brimmer. He changed his name after getting a contract with Paramount in 1928. German sounding names probably weren't popular after WWI.

 

So his Agent suspecting a bomb of a career, anticipated the invention of porn stars?

 

Or the studio suggested it, which happened a lot in those days.

Dix was athletic with a good voice, so "Ernie Brimmer" might not have sounded manly enough.

 

I'm always amazed at how 23rd/24th century people know so very much about old movies etc.. most of my peers have never seen GWTW (I have memorized it).

 

Tom Paris seems to be the only one who knows of Republic Pictures' old serials, since Captain Proton is basically the Rocketman/Commando Cody character put into Universal's Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon serials.

What's surprising is there's seldom (if any) reference to Paramount's film library, though I don't think they made any serials.

My favorite old movie is "The Big Sleep", with Bogart and Bacall.

 

I went through an old movie phase years ago but like my great literature phase have not revisited.. other than GWTW and The African Queen which I loved.

 

Technically, since there's no Tough Harry (stationary or running,) there can't be a parody of him. For what it's worth Fantasy Harry's backslapping ways are not manly, but conceled aggression, which fits bitter.

As for the failure for the new figures to work? Harry from the Ex-Past must have told Starfleet what happened, and in their review must have worked out what they believed to be the correct figures. It was genuinely surprising that the scheme failed to go through as planned. Kim instantly blaming himself is guilt. Possibly the writers meant for Kim, to have screwed it up because Kim is stupid. (Yes, Kim knows engineering and science, but that's only book smart, not street smart, thus it's actually stupid.) This attitude to Kim is especially likely since Tom Paris THE WRITER (aka the Godhead Incarnate) made a face to indicate reservations about the scheme. Unfortunately if Paris really knew the plan was going to fail, he was the stupid one for not really making the point. Best not to dwell on this aspect of the episode, eh?

As for the supposedly selfish motive of guilt, well, people's motives are always ambiguous that way. The only way to keep that smear off Kim is if he didn't feel any guilt. Which to be honest given the situtation would be kind of monstrous of him.

However, since the emotional climax of the story is when Kim "wins," and saves the ship and his arms go pumping and he cries yes, and since it's just an asshole salving his pride, then the episode must be shit. Well the wise and good may agree with you, but hoi polloi usually like Timeless, and think it's one of the best episodes. Possibly the very best even. How imperceptive of them.
