For people who never saw the Classic stories while they were in their first or second run on PBS, I get that. But please keep in mind that for those of us who did see this in first/second run in the '80s, it was a new thing, and not what anyone expected.
Oh, yeah, I'm not trying to say it wasn't a big moment. Any Doctor's death is big, and the 5th's sacrifice was definitely great, and memorable. I was just trying to say why it didn't quite have the same impact for me after coming from NuWho, but it was still a moment worthy of The Doctor, and a milestone for the character.
