is TOS the only 'true' Star Trek?

Don't be silly. TOS is near and dear to my heart, and the Trek I grew up on, but even I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to assert that it's the only "true" Trek. The latter series and movies have all contributed to the vast edifice that is Star Trek.

At this point, I kinda want to vaporize the words "true" and "real" from all discussions of Trek, as they're usually just employed as clubs by people who feel their view of what Star Trek "should" be trumps any other approach.

I'm not sure how any fictional universe can be "true" anyway.

I see a time where someone who had grown up on nuTrek watching TOS for the first time and hating it because it didn't have Quinto and Chris, has a Scotty with a missing finger, and Uhura who isn't in love with Spock...

Technically, TOS is the only original Star Trek. Everything after that are spin-offs. It doesn't make any one series better than the other, it's just the first series of any genre is considered the original.

Could you imagine what TOS would've been if Roddenberry would've been able to produce a series based on "The Cage" ????? Amazing!

    They're all Trek

But much like Sean Connery was the first Bond, many people will feel the first is the best.

I was born in 82, and grew up on TNG and the Berman era (DS9, VOY, ENT, etc) but I think TOS is the best. Closely followed by DS9

...Relics is considered one of the best episodes in its series?! By who?

TOS was great for what it represented, and had a few really great episodes. But a majority of it was downright hacky. I prefer the spinoffs.

Hacky?! By that I assume you mean, written by hacks. Hacks like the great Theodore Sturgeon, Larry Niven, Robert Bloch, Harlan Ellison, Norman Spinrad..

This. Although I'd class the new movies as an adaptation of the original rather than a spin-off.

"Except keep the holodecks working." :p

But to answer the OP's question, I would say No, but it all depends on what you mean by 'true'. Sure it was nice to get the little referrences to previous shows, but isn't that just about using your history, i.e. In the RN, Admiral Lord Nelson is still held in high regard by todays members of the RN. Is that any different from the likes of Sisko, Janeway etc.. looking back at the exploits of Kirk.

If you look at the small print all the series that came after TOS.... TNG DS9 VOY and ENT all say based on Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry

TNG had "Created by Gene Roddenberry" in the opening credits since he actually had a hand in its creation.

Everything after TNG all say "Based On" since Roddenberry had absolutely nothing to do with those shows.

Which is odd since he's a huge fan of the Abrams films...
