Just finished watching Shore Leave - does anyone know if Yeoman Tonia Barrows ever appeared in any other episodes? Was there every any discussion of making her a recurring character?

She was a guest star, not a regular or an extra, so no.

As for Tonia appearing in other TOS episodes, not that I can recall, though it would probably be easy enough to confirm either way, I'm just too lazy to go look it up right now.

I'm currently reading Crucible: Provenance of Shadows, which fills in a few blanks concerning Tonia's Starfleet career, post-Shore Leave.

    ------------

Ah, I see that Nerys Myk and Melakon have already confirmed it, thank you.

I don't believe she did, if so then I never recognized her which I should have since Shoreleave is one of my favorite episodes.

Hmm, one of the films listed for her on IMDB is Hell's Bloody Devils (1970), which might be interesting to track down. Emily plays an FBI agent, though the story appears to be one of those trashy biker movies or something with Neo-Nazis and all sorts of weird stuff.

Credits also show Keith Andes (Akuta in "The Apple), Rhae & Alyce Andrece (the Alice Twins in "I, Mudd", John Carradine, Broderick Crawford, Anne Randall (Playboy's Miss May 1967), sexploitation star Bambi Allen, and even Col. Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame.

MPAA rating is the old GP, a forerunner to PG, and after checking one of the external reviews, it's not clear whether there's any naughty bits.

After Rand, they likely decided "never have the same yeoman twice."

I don't know about a recurring yeoman character.

Storywise, I know Rand was dropped because of the romantic conflicts with Kirk and other entanglements.

It could have been cool to see a recurring yeoman, one that wasn't a romantic interest for Kirk. A familiar right-hand man (woman) for Kirk could be a nice addition to the crew. Maybe like Kyle, a familiar reliable face.

Instead, the yeoman became like Redshirts... new random faces to appear and never be seen again.

OTOH, we wouldn't have enjoyed all the great ladies who appeared throughout the series as yeoman.

Barrows never returned, nor was she ever mentioned again.

The management really liked her and actually were going to bring her back as a reoccurring character and even mentioned it to her which she was receptive too. She was however never offered another part in TOS for reasons unknown. Perhaps in the mad rush to get shows on the air; she was simply overlooked.

She was liked by Justman but Coon did not care for the flirtation between her and McCoy and didn't want to explain the "implied relationship" in future episodes; so she was not asked back. Coon felt that the director Sparr pushed the relationship too far.

"Justman told Coon that he was "particularly impressed" with the work of Bruce Mars and Emily Banks, as Finnegan and Yeoman Barrows. He felt that Barrows, in particular came off as a person that people would like to see again and the rapport between her and McCoy should be explored in future episodes.

Emily Banks in a 2012 interview said "They said something about bringing me back, but then they never did anything about it. So that was that . . . "

Source is the much debated "These are the Voyages" book

Sounds like it was an idea that Justman had that never got any farther than that.

Basically the first season 'bible' had Rand as a regular.

So there were episodes in the pipeline that were written with Rand in mind. When she left the show they simply crossed out her name in the scripts and had a 'yeoman of the week'

By production order Rand's last episode was #13 "Conscience..."
    #14 was Galileo--featuring a one-shot yeoman
#17 was Shore Leave--featuring a one shot yeoman
    #18 was Squire --------featuring a one-shot yeoman
    #22 was A Taste of----featuring a one shot yeoman

I've also heard that 'Dagger' was originally written for Rand, coming along as just a yeoman rather than 'specialist in criminology' but they were already having 2nd thoughts about the ongoing relationship. The episode refers to the previous 'Christmas party'--which seems like it would be more of a Rand type reference.

at any rate, it seems that after Whitney left and the scripts in the 'pipeline' were filled with other yeomen--they decided the position was reaaly not needed.

How many times after "A Taste of..." did yeomen have speaking roles in the series? 5?

After having yeomen with speaking parts in 14 of the first 22 episodes (including Yeoman's Colt and Smith in the pilots.)

A lot of Justman's ideas seemed to end like that, or they'd be used and he wouldn't be credited.

Shore Leave was the only one. I'm not sure if she was in any other books apart from the Crucible one. Shame that.

I'd suspect that the reason yoemen didn't show up in leter eps was because there wasn't a regular in a yoeman role. No reason to write one in after Grace left.

    OrI could be wrong. :)
