Because it was a big-budget movie made in 2009. If you can recast James T. Kirk, you can update the look of the 23rd century just the same.

Starfleet used retrieved sensor readings of the Narada from 2233 to advance its own technology further than was originally achieved in the Prime timeline. Even Abrams and his people suggested as much to explain some of the stark technological and aesthetic differences between the original history and what Nero created with his arrival.

That's a handwave, just like the refit in The Motion Picture. What they really did in 1979 was re-imagine Trek's look for a big budget movie. They did the same here.

Real Trek is what ever CBS says it is. Currently that's the movies JJ Abrams is making. Oh and it is a quality product. Previous Trek films, not so much. (Though I enjoyed many of them).

So you like technobabble? I guess there had to be at least one person who does. Hey, if you like the technobabble, wait for the TNG reboot. This one is TOS where the TB is minimal .

The ships look "better" because the movie was made in 2009 not 1999.

If you saw the movie you know why they were placed in their position in spite being young and inexperienced.

Its a reboot, clean or not. The old continuity isn't coming back either way.

What events after Nemesis? Romulus was blown up. That's about it.

    Yep.

The interference of Nero in the timeline can only take you so far. As Dennis might so eloquently put it, that's just a fig leaf. You can see something busting out from behind the fig leaf, especially in the form of the Kelvin. ;) :guffaw:

You want a big budget 2013 summer blockbuster movie to look cheaper than a crappy UPN TV show from 15 years ago?

Plus if you love nonsensical, last-second deus ex machina technobabble so much, perhaps you should just stick to Voyager.

an airplane cockpit today looks better than TNG. those are the breaks with sci-fi.
