Chicago librarian Henry De Tamble (Erica Bana) suffers from a rare genetic disorder that causes him to drift uncontrollably back and forth through time. On one of his sojourns, he meets the love of his life, Claire (Rachel McAdams), and they marry. But the problems and complexities of any relationship are multiplied by Henry's inability to remain in one time and place, so that he and his beloved are forever out of sync.

I should finish reading the book. I started it several years ago, but I never got past the first couple chapters. The movie looks pretty good, though. I love Rachel McAdams.

Planning to see this, since I'm a big fan of McAdams (when was her last movie, seriously?).

It was a good movie with a fresh perspective: the one left behind.

It wasn't as emotional as I had hoped for. Well-acted, good script, but the "moments" I wanted either weren't there or weren't as strong as I thought they could have been.

Still, a definite above-average from me.

Earlier this year she had that Russell Crowe/Ben Affleck newspaper/politics thriller.

Looking forward to this, too bad I have no idea if and when it'll actually play over here.

^ Do you get movies dubbed or with subtitles?

Also, Roger Ebert gave this movie ** 1/2 stars, which is 1/2 a star below thumbs up, even though he admits that the star ratings are pretty arbitrary.

^ Subtitles. There's no way I'd ever go see a movie if it was dubbed.

I'm actually expecting this to be the case. While I have nothing against Rachel McAdams, she just hasn't felt like Clare in any of the clips I've seen so far. She just doesn't seem to carry the emotional/character weight that I always felt from Clare.

It's always a risk, interpreting a well-beloved book. Despite my reservations about McAdams, I'm so delighted that the film has been made, and the story seems to have been treated with great integrity.

I've spent this week watching through Angel's fifth season. A couple nights ago I hit "You're Welcome" and "A Hole in the World" and have pretty much been a basket case since then. So, I think I'm emotionally loaded enough to have The Time Traveler's Wife completely send me over the edge. ;)

It does come off with the pacing of a novel, which I particularly enjoyed. A lot of folks these days don't have the patience anymore for easy-paced exposition.

A slow-cooking stew is usually better tasting than a microwaved one. (Are you listening Michael Bay? ;) )

I'd thought the same of myself, but have encountered some occasional odd circumstances. Every so often, a movie is released with a better dubbed translation than subtitled translation (e.g. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in English), and sometimes films are dubbed by essentially the original cast (e.g. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero in English), both of which can make the dubbed version a compelling alternative to subtitles.

Rachel McAdams and Ron Livingston are two of my favorite actors, but I don't think I'm likely to see the movie. As much as I always enjoy both of their performances, I disliked the book strongly (I liked only Alba among its characters by the time I finished reading it), and somewhat doubt they could make up for its deficiencies - which is too bad, as I always look forward to seeing them in new movies.

^ Yep, Bay puts a ton of C4 into the microwave and then turns it on. ;)

Going to see the noon showing...back to review later! I loved the book; one of my favourites of recent release (another, Middlesex, I believe is getting film treatment too). :techman:
