So I haven't read any bios or memoirs of anyone who worked on Star Trek. I'd like to read some of them because sometimes it feels like I'm only getting part of the story from what's on screen. I was wondering if we could get a thread that lists which actor, crew, writer, and so on have written books?
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Off the top of my head... Nimoy - I am Not Spock, I am Spock Shatner - Star Trek Memories, Star Trek Movie Memories, Up Till Now Takei - To the Stars Wheaton - Just a Geek Kelley - From Sawdust to Stardust (biography, not autobiography) Doohan - Beam Me Up, Scotty
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse And more: Grace Lee Whitney - The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy Nichelle Nichols - Beyond Uhura Terry Lee Rioux - From Sawdust to Stardust, The Biography of DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy Kristine M. Smith - DeForest Kelley, My Life and Times with a Remarkable Gentleman Actor Walter Koenig - Warped Factors Walter Keonig - Chekov's Enterprise: A Personal Journal of the Making of Star Trek - The Motion Picture David Alexander - Star Trek Creator - The Authorized Biography of Gene Roddenberry Joel Engel - Gene Roddenberry: The Myth and Man Behind Star Trek
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Susan Sackett -- Inside Trek: My Secret Life with Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry Yvonne Fern -- Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation (be sure and get the revised second - paperback - edition) Lawrence Montaigne -- A Vulcan Odyssey Sean Kinney -- Captain Pike Found Alive! Paul Olsen -- Creating the Enterprise
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Just read Chekov's Enterprise over the weekend.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse I've been reading memoirs all through 2014, and have read most of them now. I got my reading list from here: http://www.well.com/~sjroby/lcars/bioindex.html I'd love to have someone to discuss the memoirs with, JRoss, so SNAP TO IT! I just finished reading Beyond Uhura, but I've also read: Star Trek Memories (read this and Movie Memories when it was first released, but I also own the audiobook versions which I've listened to countless times.) Star Trek Movie Memories Get a Life Up Until Now (the audiobook) I Am Not Spock I Am Spock From Sawdust to Stardust (De Kelley bio) Beam Me Up, Scotty by Doohan (and Peter David) Chekov's Enterprise by Koenig (although this is more like Koenig's diary on the making of TMP. He also wrote Warped Factors, which is the only TOS actor bio I still need to read, but if Chekov's Enterprise is an indication, Warped Factors will be a fun read.) To the Stars by Takei (I read this one back in high school) The Longest Trek by Grace Lee Whitney Star Trek Creator by David Alexander (Roddenberry bio) Gene Roddenberry: The Last Conversation Gene Roddenberry: The Myth and the Man by Joel Engel Inside Trek by Susan Sackett View from the Bridge by Nick Meyer
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Kirstie Alley's funny book, "How to Lose Your Ass and Regain Your Life", has a section on the casting ordeals for ST II. Whoopi Goldberg wrote "Book", but no TNG memories that I recall. Gary (Soval) Graham has an acting reflections book, "Acting & Other Flying Lessons".
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse From the "crew" side of things, there's Beyond the Clouds, a biography of Matt Jefferies, written by his brother.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Have you read it yet? I got my hands on a copy recently but have not gotten around to it yet.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Oh, and I thought of some more: Wil Wheaton - Just a Geek Wil Wheaton - Dancing Barefoot Wil Wheaton - The Happiest Days of Our Lives I have these as audiobooks, and they're terrific. Wil reads them, of course, and does a great job.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Patrick Stewart: The Unauthorized Biography by James Hatfield The Encyclopedia Shatnerica: An A to Z Guide to the Man and His Universe by Robert Schnakenberg
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Speaking of Wil Wheaton, there's also his Memories of the Future, Volume I, collecting a series of blog posts he wrote about TNG Season 1.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Interesting note. I believe this is the same James Hatfield who wrote Fortunate Son, the unauthorized biography of George W Bush that detailed Bush's drug use, as well as Bush being AWOL fron his military duties in the '70's. Hatfield died under questionable circumstances shortly before 9/11.
Re: Request for a sticky thread: Charting the Memoirs-verse Hah, I forgot Chekov's Enterprise and Memories of the Future even though I've read the darn things. Also, Wallace Shawn is an essayist of some note. He has not written an autobiography that I'm aware of, but he does have several books to his name.
Inside Star Trek: The Real Story by Herb Solow and Bob Justman is a must read memoir about the making of the original series.
Shatner: Where No Man by William Shatner, Sondra Marshak & Myrna Culbreath is one of the weirdest things I've ever read. Seriously psychedelic. Should only be read with incense and peppermints.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes their minds blown. This is a seriously bizarre book. "The WAY I wanted a Dog..." This sits next to "Captain Quirk", "Encyclopedia Shatnerica", & " The Transformed Man" on my shelf.
This & Solow's "Star Trek Sketchbook" are probably the most insightful books into the making of TOS. And David Gerrolds' "Making of Star Trek" & "The Trouble with Tribbles"- excellent! I find most of the autobiography books disappointing. The actors don't seem to remember a lot. They recite a lot of what they've said in interviews 100x before. Or the history we're already aware of. I want the little details of their experiences on set, and rare pics. I'd like to see Rick Berman, Marina Sirtis, or Michael Dorn put out candid books while they still have lucid memories!
