A little take out dinner because I wimped out on cooking anything at the last minute. Played it safe, though...got something kinda light in case I want something else before I go to bed.

Those are the kind of watches I, some of my friends and many family members had when I was a school kid in the eighties. Also, those of us who are of that certain age shouldn't forget the Swatch watches of various wild colors...calculator watches as well, the bane of every math teacher's existence during a pop quiz or test. :p

Lots of fond memories of all those old school digital watches. A few models of those were made to last, lemme tell ya. Some of them are probably floating around on wrists as we speak.

My dad still has one of those really basic Casio watches from the mid/late '80s. He has nice watches too, but if he's just pottering around the house or garden, or going to the gym, he'll throw on the Casio.

Fairly expensive day today, but worth it as my house had lots of little odd jobs that needed doing so I booked in both an electrician and a plumber to come round and fix everything up. Now all done.

Back in the late seventies I bought one of those first LCD-watches (available here) it was only about eleven millimetres thick!!! -a month later my dad bought one that was at half the price and less than four millimetres thick!

That was my last digital watch! -but dad wore his for years...

"a couple of bags of groceries" -Dang! that sounds expensive!

No, -really! - the last time I left a supermarket with 'a couple of bags', I almost regretted the amount of stuff I bought!

Today I bought a jar of 'home-made' apple, orange, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom jam from the nice café/store around the corner (where everything costs four times the normal price because they make it themselves).
I wish I hadn't bricked my phone and could post an image of the metal-clipped, rubber-sealed, two-part glass jar it came in (wonder if they want me to return it?).

I have a similar place near me. I consider reusing those jars myself to be my little way of amortising the higher purchase cost somewhat...

^Funny, that... I almost asked how much of the price was the deposit on the jar*

Oh, whatever! I can always use it for some of my own preserves... I mean, I am possibly the only T-BBS'er making their own Maraschino-cherries :rommie:

Depending on the size, they're quite good even for storing staples like coffee, tea, sugar, rice, etc, etc.

Indeed, just not the type that comes in five parts: the jar, the (loose) rubber seal, the lid and the two little metal clamps that hold the lid down.

The other ones that don't actually fall apart when you open them are the ones I use for all those etc's.
I am making my rumtopf in one of those this year:

(better picture of the content & picture of some other preserves I made last year).

About to go buy a little dinner. Friends called to say they're not coming into town tonight, so time for Plan B. Thinking of another pizza...but not entirely sure.

Half a smoked chicken and half a liverwurst, some cherries and blackcurrants for the rumtopf, a kilo of peas, chedda, brie & emmenthaler some apples and pears -'twas the 'farmer's market'-day today :rommie:
