I'm ignorant here--is it actually against youtube policy to upload stuff from tv shows??

Fanvids fall into a gray area in copyright law. Generally, the sorts of video clips vidders use are considered to be in the "fair use" category. We're using them for entertainment purposes, artistic expression, etc., and most importantly, we're not cutting into Paramount's profits. People who upload entire episodes, however, do get in trouble if caught, because they are doing something that allows others to watch Trek or whatever without paying for the DVDs of the show. Fan vidders are not doing that.

It's the music that gets us busted. Most of us use songs that don't belong to us and we use them in their entirety for the most part. The RIAA and etc tend to get a bit miffed about that. ;-)

To protect themselves from getting sued for allowing such behavior, YouTube does have a rule against uploading any sort of copyrighted material, however, they claim to enforce it much more strictly than they actually do. Realistically, there's no way for them to bust everyone who shares copyrighted stuff, so they depend on bots to catch offenders that tip certain alarms, so to speak. People in the know can stay under the radar by careful management of their uploads.

Yes. Anything that you did not create from scratch (audio or video) or have a license to use is technically not allowed on YouTube. The sheer volume of junk on YouTube means a lot of things slip through the cracks, though.

99.9% of the time, though, it's the audio YouTube takes issue with in music vids, not the video, since the little snippets of video do fall under "fair use."

EDIT: AMG just explained this way better, lol. Never mind.

Sad considering how much music I've bought over the years after first hearing it on a fan video!

The law changes slowly. With the rapid pace of technological advancements in the way we listen to and share media, copyright law simply cannot keep up. By the time the courts can make a ruling on whether Method A of obtaining media is legal, Methods B, C, D, E, and F have already been invented.

It's my humble opinion that the copyright laws in place today were already outdated ten or even fifteen years ago.

I have studied these issues for a long time and could ramble on forever, but for now, I'll leave you with a quote from Weird Al on filesharing:

“I have very mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I’m concerned that the rampant downloading of my copyright-protected material over the Internet is severely eating into my album sales and having a decidedly adverse effect on my career. On the other hand, I can get all the Metallica songs I want for FREE! WOW!!!!!”

I wonder if this means he's cool with me for using one of his songs for a Janeway vid?

    Wasn't there either a J/C or a J/7 for "Angels", too?

    Loved "Devil"...

Not sure about the 0:45... she "looks" like she's waiting for something... is it when she gives Tom the ultimatum in "Thirty Days"?

It is, indeed. That ep is usually pretty easy to spot because of the difference in the lighting that was used.

Here's the TrekCore page with the screenshots:

    Good lord, I'm impressed. :bolian:

Who can look at Lighting when Janeway is in the scene? ;)

 LOL the different lighting is pretty! Look at the scene on the bridge, especially, when they first discover the ocean planet. And the brig scenes have that lovely blue misty look to them. Very nice!

Thanks! I couldn't place it for some reason.

Now, I have another question: From which episode is the immediate next clip of Janeway? The one where everything seems to be shaking, like they're at a high speed or something? :D

That's "Bliss." I think Jim Wright called that her "hide the children" crazy face. She's happy because they're under the spell of that giant space monster. :)

Y'all. Holy crap. Look what Froot made with her own two hands! You will NOT believe how beautiful this vid is. I can't think of enough nice things to say about it. Oh, and pay special attention to the bit around 1:50. That is so gorgeous, it brings tears to my eyes.
