The Sulu likes his tea (not coffee!) that much.

He also likes to put his feet up while on duty.

Because the captain's chair doesn't have drink holders.

It doubles as a liquor cabinet too. You open that up and you've got all sorts.

I always figured it could retract into the floor when not in use

I always figured it was small desk, where the Captain could set padds, coffee cups, etc., with maybe a compartment in the side.

It could also have holoemitters built in, so it could project holograms above it for various reasons.

Whenever a yeoman made a cuppa that tasted like a mouthful of copper coins, that's where he made them stand.

    Shirtless invariably.

It was there to cover a part of the mechanism that made the bridge shake - I think it's called a gimbal. :)

Judging by its height, I always thought the coffee table doubled as a chair for the captains' yeoman to sit while giving the captain a... you know, I'm not going to continue that thought for decency's sake. :)

Do I have the be the douche that says "because the script called for a cup of tea to be shaken off a table and they built the set to suit the script"...

In universe, if a starship Captain wants a little table on his bridge, he would order someone to come put one in, rank hath it's privileges.

Its a convenient place for his Papillon to sit when Sulu has to stand up.

The Enterprise D bridge looks like a hotel lobby and you're complaining about a coffee table...?

    :p

Maybe that's where the trend was heading. These days the Enterprise looks like an Apple store.

Kirk was seen drinking coffee while in his chair in both TOS and TMP. The cup's gotta get put down somewhere.
