Of course they're really not meant to be clever just evocative of those crazy names in the old movie serials. But I'm sure most of us are aware of that. :D

    I mean...Ming the Merciless!:guffaw::lol::guffaw:

Ming the Merciless isn't that bad. Lucas would have given him a name like Darth Mercilous.

Apparently for people in the Netherlands, TESB was a bit of a letdown because "Darth Vader" in Dutch means "dark father".

    Oh that clever Lucas...

All the Sith names are devoid of creativity. Why? Because creativity is for the weak!:

    -Marka Ragnos: He's Ragnaroky
-Naga Sadow: Ok this one is kind of clever. Most people might think Naga = Man-Serpent and Shadow minus the "H". But Naga Sadhus are Hindu mystics. So take it from Star Wars, Hindu's are evil. As if Temple of Doom wasn't proof enough.
-Darth Malak: Because he's full of MALICE!
-Darth Revan: Quoth the Revan. Nevermore.
-Darth Nihilus: I hate everything because I'm a Nihilist!
-Darth Sion: Because he's a Psion. I case you couldn't figure that out.
-Darth Bandon: Becuase he has reckless ABANDON
-Darth Ruin: Ok they're not even trying anymore.
-The Dark Underlord: I take it back. NOW they're not trying anymore.
    -Kaan: KAAAAAANNNNNN!!
-Darth Bane: Jez he even looks like the Batman character.
    -Darth Andeddu: Because he's Un-dead...Oooo.
-Darth Caedus: It means "Battle of Darkness". So ok that's cool.
-Darth Treya: Because she'll BE-TRAY YA.

And that's just he old timers. The newer ones are even worse.

-Darth Kryat: Makes sense. Named after a Tatooine Kryat Dragon. Sadly the rest of his guys all suck.
-Darth Talon: Because she's sharp like a TALON. They should have been honest like with Kryat's name and called her Darth Titties. Because God. Damn. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Talon.jpg
-Darth Azard: yEE HAW! It's The Darth's of Hazard!
-Darth Stryfe: You know they've hit bottom when they start ripping off crappy X-Men villians.
    -Darth Kruhl: Oy!
-Darth Maladi and Maleval: Because Malak wasn't MALICEY enough.
-Darth Nihl, Darth Ruyn, and 3 Darth Wyyrlocks: Now they're ripping off their own names!

I thought Caedus was based off 'caduceus', the traditional wand of healers, reflecting Jacen's initial intention of benevolent dictatorship that would bring about peace in the galaxy. (That said, I gave up on the Legacy series after Exile, so for all I know it's explained later on, but I think this was the outside-the-box reference.)

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Whatever its origin, Darth Caedus shouldn't count since it was part of the silly "Name the New Sith Lord!" contest. You know TPTB are having issues when they have to rely on their fans to name the main villain.

    Darth Veviticus=Invective
    Darth Wyyrlok=Warlock
    Darth Nihl=Nihilism
    Darth Bane=Bane
    Darth Talon=Talon
    Darth Maul=Maul
    Darth Revan=Revenant
Darth Millenial=Millenial (One of the dumbest Sith names)
    Darth Plagueis=Plague
    Darth Phobos=Phobos, or Fear
    Darth Desolous=Desolate
    Count Dooku=Doku, or poison

I like most of the Sith and Jedi names. I think some are pretty clever. Others, perhaps not so much.

Vader comes from the word invader (just as Sidious comes from the word insidious). Vader meaning father in Dutch is simply a coincidence. Darth Vader's name predates the idea that Vader is Luke's father.

What about the good guys? (or not too too bad)

Han Solo= rogue who works alone (well, he's got Chewie)
    Bib Fortuna= bib for tuna
4 LOM = for love of money
    Qui-Gon Jinn= qi gong
    Princess Leia= well, y'know

And Darth sounds like "daft" implying that they're all stupid. Which they are, because they FAIL at conquering/ruling the Galaxy.

Sidious was originally supposed to be named "Sido Dyas" which would have been clever for real..

Nothing I can find seems to support that; the earliest mention of "Sido-Dyas" is in a draft AOTC script; it may have originally been intended as an alias for Sidious in that flim, but never as his original name.

"Luke" is actually an ancient Gaelic word for "dork."

    Okay, not really.

Yup, and "Darth" is also Dutch for "big". So in essence everyone was calling him "Big Daddy" in the Netherlands.

The Emperor of Mongo is not named "Ming the Merciless." His name is just "Ming."

Er, no. I keep reading that Darth means this or that in Dutch, but the fact is: there is no word Darth in the Dutch language. Vader does mean father, but that's a coincidence.
