^Damn. It's starting to look like a real Star Wars movie. :techman:

Several of those shots show a big gate-like thing attached to a fence. Makes me wonder if the characters are trying to keep something out (or in)?

Well I guess it's something, but we've already seen every variation of alien city and planet before with the prequels, so I kinda have a hard time getting excited about it this time.

As excited as I am for the movie, it won't be until we see the leading actors in costume again that I'll truly be doing flips and geeking out.

I'm actually pretty encouraged that they're using practical effects for some of the aliens and creatures. CGI is great, but I'm still a sucker for practical effects. Can't wait to see how they look on the big screen!

It all looks pretty good. Frankly, while I appreciate the technology of CGI and enjoy where it worked and looked fantastic and eye-catching in the Prequel Trilogy, I'd much rather see more practical on-set effects such as puppets and alien makeup after all the past decade and a half of almost nonstop and increasing CGI in major films, especially sci-fi and fantasy.

The more big puppets and guys in exotic makeup that J.J. can squeeze into Episode VII the better. Star Wars should feel more like Star Wars and not a giant video game you're watching other people playing.

Agreed. While I realize it's inevitable to have CGI in any modern scifi movie, I'm hoping JJ tries as much as possible to recapture the old school charm and style of the OT-- even including using stop-motion for the giant creatures, if possible.

Even if the Tauntaun in ESB or the Rancor in ROTJ may not look as technically "realistic" as the creatures in the prequels, they're still a helluva lot more cool to watch in action. And a whole lot more memorable.

    These photos are awesome.

I think they were "leaked" on purpose?

    Anyone know aurebesh?

That's my take on it. I sincerely doubt J.J. and his people would have let dozens of set images hit the Web if they didn't want these to leak out for promotional purposes and boost excitement for the new film.

Look at how some of the background extras posed for the pictures and knew their photos were being taken. These aren't surreptitious pictures taken in secret and then cleverly and silently transmitted to the rest of the world.

I wonder what locale that's supposed to be. Maybe Luke's finally gone to Tosche Station to pick up those power converters.

I would personally draw the line at using stop motion for creatures. It's great for something like Wallace and Grommet, but when you are trying to portray the realistic movement of a living creature I still think it falls short. The Rancor scene in ROTJ is one of the few scenes that took me out of the movie. The Imperial Walkers in Empire looked good, but then again I'm a big fan of model work.

We know of Mos Eisley, Anchorhead and Mos Espa when it comes to settlements that contain technology and are populated by humans and humanoids. Could be one of them, or maybe an entirely new spaceport or marketplace that was never seen during the course of the previous films.

I don't remember an Anchorhead? Which film does that appear in?

Isn't it mentioned in Episode IV?

Not to be nitpicky, but the Rancor wasn't stop-motion. It was a rod puppet shot with a high speed camera.

Yeah, only mentioned by name, never seen. Before finding out about Owen and Beru, Luke told Obi-Wan that he could take him and the droids as far as Anchorhead so they could find transport to Alderaan.
