Arthur Christmas - On Demand - I was searching for a holiday movie for the boys to watch while I was putting up the Christmas tree. We usually cut down our own tree but with us living in an apartment, we decided to go with a pre-lit artificial tree from Target. So set up was amazing fast and easy, allowing me to watch most of the movie with the boys. I was actually surprised at how much I really enjoyed it. I remember when it came out originally and had absouloutly no interest in seeing it. The story is simple and straight forward, but really engaging. The animation and voice acting is superb, with Jim Broadbent as Santa, Bill Nighy as GrandSanta, High Laurie as Steve Christmas and James McAvoy as Arthur. We'll be adding this as a family favorite for future Christmas time viewing.

Liz & Dick (✩½) - Live TV - Saw this Lifetime movie last night. Lindsay Lohan made her big comeback in this TV movie about the ups and downs of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's relationship. It started off absolutely dreadful, then got slightly less so as it progressed. For something that was supposed to be a big project, it looked cheap, it had cuts to Lohan and her co-star narrating the movie which didn't work at all, it had obvious green screen shots and a lot of story was excluded or glossed over. I liked Lohan though, or rather I liked the idea that she's back and trying to pull herself together, and she looked great too, not necessarily as Liz, just in general. What a nice break. Ang Lee takes on Yann Martel's Booker-winning novel, which no doubt required quite a bit of ingenuity to translate to the screen, given its nature. The result is the most superb and assured craft I've yet seen this year; they should probably award the Oscars for cinematography and visual effects right now. Suraj Sharma, who plays the title character, surely has made one of the most difficult acting debuts in recent memory. He pretty much carries the picture, acting for most of his screentime opposite only (very convincing) visual effects (though having as skilled a director as Lee no doubt helps quite a lot). It's not perfect (I could quibble with pieces of the beginning and end, particularly the very end, which seems almost to glide past the impact of the big reveal), but it's a pretty stunning artistic achievement. Did she owe someone a favor? I like her and have found her comedy turns to be mostly well done. James Franco is actually pretty good with comedic elements from Pineapple Express to Green Hornet. I knew Danny McBride was the wild card but still it was the blatantly horrid overly juvenile script that killed this movie. The previews let me know some crude moments would be involved but in context that material can be funny. It was the forced OTT elements that ruined this. I thought Danny McBride just acted the weird childish material he was handed but seeing as how he cowrote this it seems that's just his preference. I couldn't even find something worthwhile in this like other comedies I was mixed on such as Bridesmaids or Cop Out. Goldeneye: After watching Skyfall recently I had some time over Thanksgiving so I decided to watch the film where Skyfall took some key plot points to use again. While I did like Skyfall and would grade them about the same Goldeneye is a much better film imo. Sean Bean's turncoat is a lot more fun to watch than Silva. For my count I'm only wanting to include re-watches if I haven't seen them in at least a decade and this one qualifies.

Some of it was obvious, too. I dunno...Jennifer Lawrence looked good in it, and Bradley Cooper wasn't terrible, but I'm kinda glad my friend K/C backed out from wantin' to go, so I won't have to see it twice. Went to see RotG in 3D this evenin' before my shift starts. Cute movie, I think it'd be pretty good for kids, of which there were a few in the theater with their parents. The 3D was well done, which is to be expected for a CGI film. And there's a bonus bit midway through the credits. Still tryin' to see Lincoln and the Red Dawn remake....and there's a midnight premiere for Killing Them Softly Thursday night.
134. In the Loop Very funny comedy (with a lot of creative swearing and cursing) about the British and US government and their preparations before declaring a war. The film flows by fast and only once it ended did I notice that there was no soundtrack/no background music, which is unusual but fitted very well here.

Sunset Boulevard (A+) After nearly an hour on various buses to get to the theatre last night, I arrived to find Lincoln sold out. Not impressed. So I bought my ticket for Thursday, and took a cab back home to watch one of my Blu-ray discs that I've yet to look at. Arguably Billy Wilder's most acclaimed film, which was just released in this format, this is yet another example of Hollywood's love/hate relationship with itself. Some aspects of this film's production are a lot harder to appreciate for modern filmgoers, since it depends very heavily on the subtext of the real histories of so many of the people in the cast, which would be much less recognizable at 60+ years' remove. Lincoln (A-) Steven Spielberg's decade-long quest to adapt Team of Rivals finally arrives on the screen...based on events that take up about a half-dozen pages of the book. This is the eighteenth of his movies I've seen, pushing him into the position of my most-watched director of all-time (breaking a tie with Woody Allen). The result is a pretty good movie, featuring a Daniel Day-Lewis performance for the ages. Honestly some of the most immersive acting I've ever seen on screen; if we brought the real Lincoln into the present day for a comparison, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a lot like this. He's supported by a pretty formidable supporting cast, including Tommy Lee Jones (in one of his best roles in a while, and giving a nice boost in prominence to an undeservedly neglected historical figure), Sally Field, David Straithairn, and half a hundred notable character actors in one- or two-scene parts. Also, in what I must assume is a visual gag, Hal Holbrook is a dead ringer for Teddy Kennedy while playing Preston Blair. A lot of people have said they think the movie should have ended slightly before it does, and I think that's probably true, though the added few minutes don't detract in any meaningful way. This is quite a change of pace for Spielberg. It's the most performance-driven film of this that I've ever seen, and quite stylistically restrained (as so many reviewers have observed). It might actually have done with a bit more sentiment at the end -- Lincoln's death (spoiler!) is handled in a pretty muted manner. Cinema: 45 (+1) Home Video: 76 Computer: 13
135. Cloud Atlas This is one of the few cases, where I actually liked the film better than the book (mostly because the intercutting of the stories worked better for me than the way it was done in the novel). It had a great score and good performances - seeing the actors in the different time-periods with different (partly very good, partly quite bad) make-up was especially fun. Nice that they showed who played who with clips during the credits, I did not recognise everyone.

But this followup isn't anywhere near the quality level ascribed to their former film. It has a number of pretty strong sequences, but the intentionally lethargic pacing doesn't quite work in numerous instances (for a movie that's only 97 minutes, I was checking my watch repeatedly). There's also the issue of the political, well, "subtext" isn't the right word, because it's pretty much text. The presentation of this is so blunt that it clearly can't have been intended to be subtle either, but, again, even as an intentional decision it doesn't work for me. Stars David Duchovny, Minnie Driver and Carroll O'Connor in his final role. It's a "kismet" love story and it's about as good/mundane as your usual light-hearted romantic comedy. 327. Solaris (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - Finally saw this, the 1972 Russian version with english subtitles. I've heard people complain that the 2002 movie focussed too much on the love story, but this one did the same. I was also surprised at how similar this was to the 2002 remake. A lot of the scenes were very much alike. The movie was slow, plodding and a real chore to watch most of the time, but it told a fascinating story and had excellent production values. 328. The Beaver (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A husband/father suffering from depression goes over the edge and starts talking to a beaver puppet that he wears at all times, much to the dismay of his family and colleagues. Stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. Jodie Foster also directs. First off, this is not a comedy, it's a serious drama about a seriously troubled man, but the presence of the beaver does give it a somewhat quirky and offbeat feel. I'd say that it's a shame that Mel Gibson's antics brought this one down, but the probability that it looks like a comedy when it isn't might have done that just as well. Check it out. It's worth it just for the originality. By the way, this is one of two movies where Yelchin and Lawrence play a couple. The other is Like Crazy. 136. Rise of the Guardians While it doesn't do anything extraordinary, I liked this film a lot. It's a nice simple fairy tale with great music, wonderful design and good voice performances. It's a shame that it isn't doing better at the box office.

I saw it on DVD at Wal-Mart a couple of weeks ago for six bucks, and bought it. After watchin' it yesterday, I have no clue why my dad would have objected to watchin' it...great cast, good enough story, interestin' visual tricks, and its about cars! And my dad loved cars! Followed that up with a never before seen (by me) John Wayne movie. As with Hatari! awhile back, this is Wayne in the modern (for the time) era, with him as a civilian pilot flyin' transport for the US military. Ice & bad weather for a landin' in the frozen, uncharted Canadian wastelands and he has to keep his crew alive while other civilian pilots search for him. Not too bad a survival story for 1953... Went over to the Drafthouse Ritz to see KTS yesterday afternoon. And I thought it was a damn good movie. It has a great cast, bleak humor, and makes me want to read the book. It was pretty much what I was expectin' from the trailers, and I'm glad I saw it instead of puttin' it off like I have Lincoln and Red Dawn.
