I don't mind some lens flare, but I think ST:2009 demonstrated how it could easily get out of hand. Abrams himself acknowledged this as a problem, so I see it as something he's learning to artistically harness.

 

I think all those lens flares were the result of the supernova's energy traveling back in time.
