It's a fun little show, though not quite Star Trek as it doesn't have the same exploration aspect as it's centered around Earth and a fight with a singluar enemy. Whereas Trek has the colorful hippie vibe, Orion's black-and-white world is more cool and jazzy if you will. EDIT: Never thought about it before but its not unlike the series UFO.

There's only 7 (I think) episodes so it's worth hunting down if you can find subtitled versions (or you speak German...).

Every German knows that show. It's a cult classic over here. Incidently, Dietmar Schönherr, who played Commander McLane, died on friday at the age of 88.

A friend of mine sent me these a couple of years ago-- she also gave me a link to translated scripts. I haven't watched them with the translations in hand as yet, but I love the way they look.

"Knows" as in: Having heard about or seen glimpses of the show/recognizes the theme song/knows what it is about

"Knows" not as in: actually having watched the show.

Even when you qualify it like that, not every German "knows" the show. Not even close.

I think you're underestimating its popularity. It's true that many people haven't watched it but it's constantly being mentioned and referenced. It's still present in pop culture.

I mean, when I moved to Germany it didn't take long for somebody who isn't into SciFi at all to randomly mention that the starship's control console featured a flat iron.

^ I don't refute the popularity of the show, I mostly took issue with the notion that "every" German knows the series.

I really, really don't see us walking up to random Joe Shmoes (or Lieschen Müllers for that matter) on the street without encountering a lot of people who never even heard of Raumpatrouille Orion.
Especially so when they're on the younger side.

You do realize that when people say things like "everybody knows that" they don't literally mean "everybody", right?

It's is quite popular among the Italian Sci-Fi Fandom. :)

The show was broadcast by RAI (Italy's national public broadcasting company) on 1974. For the sake of comparison, Star Trek was broadcast in 1980!

If you google something like "raumpatrouille Orion subtitles" or "space patrol Orion subtitles" you should be able to find sites where you can get subtitle files with a .srt extension. Using a player like VLC you can get these subtitles to play along with the show.

Alternatively if you put the same query in YouTube I found all the episodes with English subtitles already added. Looks really nice.

I think it'd be much nicer to watch this way than trying to use a separate script.

Everyone "knows" Orioin the way everyone "knows" Trek. May not have watched it, but the images, words snd memes are everywhere.

I remember Eurovision Song Contest a few years ago, and the Greek enntrant was very robotic, in leather, etc, and Terry Wogan barked "Here comes the Borg!" And you know exactly what he meant.
