Budget cut/location change for Trek 3

Star Trek Redneck - WV

WV worked great for Summersby and J. J.'s Super 8.

 

It feels somewhat like Star Trek is being left behind as so many other film franchises move forward at such a rapid pace while Trek has such lengthy gaps between sequels..

 

nuTrek films and spin-offs at the pace Marvel do would be wonderful... *sigh*

 

I think it's fair to say Trek was actually quite "hot" again in 2009. But a painful four year wait later, the opportunity to really capitalise on that was largely pissed away.

STID is an awesome movie, but even the promotion on that was a uncordinated mess with the whole "viral marketing" secrecy nonsense.

 

I think the difference is that Marvel Studios is dedicated pretty much entirely to making MCU movies (and being a production partner on Marvel content produced by other studios), while Paramount and Bad Robot have to divide their attention among multiple franchises and standalone films.

 

Not just the marvel films.
sony is gonna be spitting out spider-man films every other year
disney is promising new star wars movies every year once they get going
the hobbit and fast and the furious come out every year
fox is ramping up x-men films and spinoffs
Warner Bros is building up the cinematic dc universe.

..yet Trek still seems to be sitting so still

 

Frankly I don't think the studios involved are confident enough in having found the right formula and team to commit themselves to massive multi-year projects like that. The key in the success of the MCU film franchise has been a "sweet spot" in the approach to the content and tone that's hard to get right even for a comic book franchise.

 

But why was Marvel confident enough to go through with it?
