David R. George III and the Typhon Pact return with the first part of a duology, Plagues of Night. Slated for release on May 29th (which puts me a bit earlier than one-week-and-one-day again, but it turns out the weekend is just more comfy for these), a lot of DS9 fans hungry for more have high hopes for this one, seeing as it features our favorite Cardassian-made space station very prominently on its cover.

Take it away, official (and it must be said, DS9-less) Simon & Schuster blurb:

Unfortunately no excerpt link this time, as the Simon & Schuster page doesn't feature one this time around.

^ Whoever it is, they seem to also be providing an alternate view of the scene in 2013's Ships of the Line.

For any other e-book readers out there we have to wait until the official release date Tuesday after next. It'll probably be a while before I get around to read it though, I've still got a bunch of unread paperbacks and e-books and I want to get through them first.

Despite not being quite caught up with the DS9 relaunch books, I look forward to reading this. I found Zero Sum Game to be a good read, and Rough Beasts was honestly not that bad, either.

I do hope to see Sisko's situation resolved soon.

EDIT: And also, I think it's high time authors change up the Defiant's prefix.

NCC-74205-A. That wouldn't be so bad, honestly!

Even if it's not resolved I'm pretty sure we'll get some more development for Sisko's story in these. The second one specifically refers to Sisko and the Robinson, so he'll be making some kind of an appearance, and if it's as major a role as it sounds, I find it hard to believe that we won't see some kind of movement in the story started in RBoE.

I'd have no qualms about it either.

Excited for this. I'm only a few books away from it in my DS9 reading scheme!

And yes, I'd love to see the Defiant reregistered to the NCC-74205-A. As we've seen/heard form the show runners numerous times, that was certainly the intention, but the budget wasn't there. At the very least, changing it to an NCC.

I remember bringing this up when the final cover art was revealed. The lack of a change to NCC annoys me way more than it should.

Ignore one of the "Below Average" votes. I've voted in the wrong thread.

^ Guess I'll have to add a way to account for that to my script. Thanks for coming forward.

*Crosses fingers that they do not destroy DS9 as he is fearing due to the description and cover of the next novel after this, namely the new starbase being built by the wormhole and the reference to 'devastating events in the Bajoran system'...*

I didn't like when they killed off Janeway, but if they destroy DS9? I'm done with 24th century Trek lit. Done, I say. Done, done, done!

The Enterprise-E crew has been in shambles and constantly swapping in and out for years now, Voyager has lost it's Captain in Janeway, Sisko got totally ripped to shreds in the last novel to feature him... I don't know if I can take much more.

Taking the characters "out of the toy box" is fine. I like that. But smashing them to bits for the sake of it? Noooo, bad.

Sigh. I miss the early 2000s. The DS9 relaunch books where glorious.

Re: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night by DRGIII Review Thread (Spoilers!)

I'm not categorically opposed to destroying the station. It would have to be a mighty fine story that pulls it off, but then I'm in the market for mighty fine stories. I mean, I'd certainly be devastated to see it go, but then to illicit emotion is one of the things I look for in a good book. Some of my favorite books are the ones I hate the most for what happens in them, if you get my drift.

It'd also be damn ballsy for the author to take on the challenge: Forever they'll be known as the one who destroyed DS9.

(Side note: I contacted Rosalind to ask if the poll can be reset/modified.)

Going to look for a copy this friday since I know my B&N usually has the book out before the end of the week, which could be thursday as well sometimes. Going to wait on reading it through, since I'm in the middle of reading the New Earth series.

Well here's hoping. Seeing as that is the Bajoran Worm Hole and DS9 on the Cover. And Sisko is the most important character in relation to that. And certainly Sisko needs to be built back up after hitting good old rock bottom.

Re: Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night by DRGIII Review Thread (Spoilers!)

Well, no. RDM said that his intention was for the second Defiant to be be registered NX-74205-A. I see no reason to get rid of the NX -- Mission: Gamma made it clear that the Defiant is still being used as a testbed for new technologies, and frankly I like the idea that the lead ship of every class always retains the NX registry. I'd just like to see her become the NX-74205-A.

No, it hasn't. The current crew was put in place in 2008's Greater than the Sum, and has remained in place since. There has been one lead character in Kadahota who left the Enterprise in 2009's Losing the Peace, and she may yet return. Meanwhile, it has been four years (three if you count Kadahota's departure) with the same basic crew in place.

    In fact, consider this:

    The pre-GttS cast featured in:
    • Resistance (2007)
    • Q & A (2007)
    • Before Dishonor (2007)
    The current cast featured in:
    • Greater than the Sum (2008)
    • Destiny: Gods of Night (2008)
    • Destiny: Mere Mortals (2008)
    • Destiny: Lost Souls (2008)
    • Losing the Peace (2009)
    • The Typhon Pact: Paths of Disharmony (2011)
    • The Typhon Pact: The Struggle Within (2011)
    • DTI: Watching the Clock (supporting role)
And by every indication, the current lineup will feature in:
    • The Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night
    • The Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn
    • The Typhon Pact: Brinksmanship
    • Cold Equations: The Persistence of Memory
    • Cold Equations: Silent Weapons
    • Cold Equations: The Body Electric
Three books published in one year, vs. eight books published over four years, with six more on the way. Three books vs. fourteen books.

It is not only wrong to say that the TNG crew has been "in shambles and constantly swapping out" for years, it is spectacularly wrong to say so.
