NASA says its a new meteor shower, possibly visible in Northern & Central America & that it "could" be prolific. Which means it "could" be a bust and we all stayed up to 4 am for no good reason. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/watchtheskies/may-camelopardalids.html#.U38-MCjp-y8 NASA is running a live web chat from 11 pm to 3 am (the shower is expected 2-4 am Eastern Daylight Savings time. In the US it will be seen best east of the Mississippi or in California. http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/22/us/meteor-shower/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 (Cloud cover will screw it up for the Mid West. So sorry. ) Start loading up on caffeine while you have the chance. (or go to bed now and set the alarm for 2 am. )
Re: Don't forget to catch the May Camelopardalids Meteor Shower tonigh Cloud cover in the Pacific Northwest is pretty much putting me to bed early too. Boo! --Alex
Re: Don't forget to catch the May Camelopardalids Meteor Shower tonigh What a bust!!!! I have seen dozens of meteor showers and this was not a shower here in Florida. I saw about 6-8 over a 3 hour period (12 AM to 3 AM) which really is about what you would expect for a sporadic rate of meteors. I will say that about 4-5 seemed to be coming from the radiant point. We saw only 1 really good one with a train but the night was a major disappointment. Any one else?
Re: Don't forget to catch the May Camelopardalids Meteor Shower tonigh Alas I had cloud cover issues too. Gave up by 1:30. On the bright side, I watched a lot of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" while waiting for the skies to (not) clear.
Re: Don't forget to catch the May Camelopardalids Meteor Shower tonigh Well, there's always the comet to try and catch next. If you have the equipment and the right conditions. http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/24/us/meteor-shower/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
