Gotta head out and buy some Playmobil toys for a friend's kid's birthday.

How is it that we, the couple with no kids, keep getting invited to CHILDREN's birthday parties???

^You bring too good gifts :rommie:

Answer quick: what do you give an 8 year old girl for her birthday?

It's on Saturday and I still haven't picked anything up for her!

I think she's at that age where she'd categorize those as for babies -and I am not a baby any more.... :(

Good job though, I'll remember your suggestion (write it down actually) for later use :bolian:

I think I shall bring Holdfast along then next time I renew my contract! Being a nerd, the apps I downloaded first were the dictionary (for use in Scrabble games), Scrabble, PBS, Scientific American, and TED Talks. I'm having so much fun!

trekkiedane, my students are in that age range. Those rubber creature bracelets are still immensely popular. Girls her age are often fond of crafty things like beading kits, friendship bracelet making, and paint-by-numbers. If she feels too mature for picture books then a beginner's chapter book could be a nice gift -- I'd recommend something like Sideways Stories from Wayside School, or Coraline. If she's into science, how about a grow your own crystals kit or something?

I got my twin nieces art kits from Amazon that lets them make their own plastic/rubber-stretchy bracelets. My sister said the kids went MAD for them.

Hmmm. I do give *damn* good gifts to the kiddos. I may never be a Mom, but I'm a damn good Aunt.

To my knowledge she's got everything under the sun when it comes to 'art-toys' -she's always liked this sort of thing and so got plenty of it.

I may have to look into it tomorrow though... could be tht I find something exceptional.

Nice suggestions quark, I am thinking book at the moment (got her clothes for x-mas)...

No, I think I ought to take you along instead, so you can persuade me to finally buy a new phone instead of still using my old one! :D

I spent a lot of money today... One of my external discs started acting up a couple of weeks ago... high time to get all the data off and onto a new disc.

All other hard discs were full so I found myself in serious need of more storage space (Quite serious need actually: earlier today I started watching Babylon 5 end-to-end. While watching I wanted to use the optical drive for something else so I tried copying the episodes from the DVD to a hard disk -- but couldn't find 4.4 GB free space anywhere on any disc ).

The solution I opted for, was to go buy a NAS device with room enough for four 3.5" HDDs.

The problem is that such a device really doesn't do anything on itself; you also have to buy discs for it! -and in my case; a router (My very first (W-)LAN [IMG]).

And since I was spending a small fortune anyway I also picked up a new keyboard - the one I'd been using the last couple of months was my 'spare' and I'd grown seriously tired of the cord - I just can't stand all those wires across my desk; mouse, monitors, keyboard, you name it...
At least the keyboards I usually buy are relatively cheap (quite cheap actually, since they rarely last more than a year or two of my use anyway :rommie: )

I think it looks like the kind of toy you'd find in an Apple store!

Found some awesomely hilarious prints for sale that combine my two great - and generally incompatible - interests: sci-fi and clothes.

    Check out http://www.etsy.com/shop/wooszoo

I ordered the Jango Fett, Jar Jar, and Scout Trooper ones. I can't link to a pic of the Jango Fett one as I got the last one for sale, but the Jar Jar and Scout Trooper ones should give you an idea of how fun these are. The outfits are SO well-chosen for each character.

They are going to look amazingly idiosyncratic once I get them framed and hang them up.
