No it's not the most exciting teaser trailer ever, but I do at least like the slightly more grounded and realistic tone. Thankfully, at least so far, it looks more like just a straightforward action movie, and not another ridiculous and overblown CGI mess like the Pirates sequels. Of course I realize this is Bruckheimer and Verbinski, so there's still a very good chance it'll end up that way...
^Well, they did have to pay Depp. That trailer looks like a great movie except for the guy in the mask and the goofy indian.
I was referring less to quality/intellgience of the movie than to what's going to put butts in seats. if they want to make a serious Western about the railroads, why cast Jonny Depp at all, much less give him crazy makeup and a crazier chapeau? That alone says "this is POTC in the Wild West." But the trailer doesn't say that at all. Mixed messages might indicate a serious disconnect between the director and the marketing campaign, or perhaps a movie that's not going to deliver what Depp's fans want. I'm no fan of the POTC movies, I stopped watching them after the first one, but they have been extremely successful and I'm certain Disney expects this movie to have a lot of the same appeal. That's why this movie has the star and the director that it has.
Mixed messages is one way to interpret this, but I see in this trailer the earmarks of a movie trying to be all things to all people. I'll hold off deciding if I'm going to see this (translation: I'll hold off deciding how hard I'll try to talk my significant other out of seeing it), but I must say it doesn't look promising. I almost burst out laughing when I heard Tonto speak in stereotypical and clichéd article-free grammar, except it was too pathetic to even laugh at. I may have dozed off during American Civilization, but I didn't know that The Lone Ranger was about railroads anyway.
While not everything that puts butts in seats is a good movie, many that do are. Movies have always been designed as entertainment. If they are entertaining, they'll bring people.
It's funny. I watched the old Clayton Moore show religiously when I was ten, but I honestly can't remember the plot of a single episode, only the opening. "Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear . . . ." At this late date, I think I remembr the Bill Cosby routine better. "Tonto, go to town."
^^ Well, there was that episode where Tonto got hit on the head and knocked out. I said "Generally." There certainly are exceptions.
the only Lone Ranger episodes i remember are the first three or four episodes that comprise his origin.
Er, did anyone really expect The Lone Ranger to be "a serious western about railroads"? It's a remake of a classic radio show, Kemo Sabe! That's like expecting The Shadow to be a serious psychological exploration of the evil that lurks in the hearts of men . . . .
I can't pretend to be an expert on SAG rules, but this doesn't sound like one of them. It's probably a contractual thing; Depp is a big star and no doubt his contract has language giving him both top billing and billing above the title.
Looking at the stills on the Empire site, I was kind of excited to see one from a scene I was an extra in.. That said, I was in the other train (which wasn't in the picture)... LOL... Yes, I'll admit it.. The $177.00 I got for a day's work is what put the budget over the top..
Anyone getting a Wild Wild West vibe after watching the trailer? We all know how well that movie did...
Kind of, yeah. The trouble with making Westerns colorful and zany-looking is that the actual look of the era is far more conducive to grim and serious stuff, a la True Grit, than POTC-style madcappery. After all, isn't Lone Ranger pretty much a Zorro ripoff, sans the Romance of swordplay, and the vibrant colors of Latin culture? The Mask of Zorro had a realistic art design, but the hacienda scenes were still plenty lively. One could always go back to the woozy, psychedelic Western color schemes of the '50s (like how Doc dressed up Marty), but that'd take some serious brass, and probably a strong metatextual vibe to boot. They're obviously not going for that approach here...
Lol, That would have been genius! Combine Lone Ranger with the old "singing cowboy" movie style of the 40's and 50's! The Lone Ranger, a musical. I think I could actually see that working in a strange way.
