Cray, Inc. (in Seattle, WA), projects its next-generation supercomputer—its XE6, due by 2013—will have as many as 1,536 or 2,304 processor cores per cabinet. Each cabinet will measure 7’9” (2.362 meters) tall by 1’11” (572 mm) wide by 4’9” (1.441 m) thick/deep, and each will weigh 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms), for the liquid-cooled model. This system should have more than 1 million processor cores! (See http://www.cray.com/Products/XE/Specifications.aspx and http://www.cray.com/Products/XE/CrayXE6System.aspx ) The Cray XT5 can process 1.75 billion operations per second (in 2010), and it was only surpassed in October 2010 by the Chinese Tiane ("Sky River/Milky Way") -1A in October 2010, being able to process 2.566 petaFLOPS (quadrillion floating point operations) per second. We may be getting close to having a shipboard computer!
