It might be better, too, when taken into context with the images on film.

A lot of people seem to love The Dark Knight score, but I didn't like it nearly as much on its own versus integrated into the film. On its own, for the most part, it seemed to just go on and on.

Movie scores, unlike regular orchestral pieces, are a collaborative effort in that the director states what he/she wants the music to say about the film. Giacchino is a talented person, but it is also tempered by the requirements given him.

I have listened to the entire thing a few times now, and I am more impressed than I was initially, and I liked it the first time. The score is actually chock full of thematic material. The main theme is everywhere, the Spock material is exotic and surprisingly lyrical, while still maintaining a restraint and elegance inherent to Vulcan culture. The Nero material is very menacing, and the action cues are fantastic. I agree that the themes don't necessarily stand out as much as you'd expect, but they do their job, and the score does have a unique quality that's hard to define. There are moments that are certainly interesting, and quite different from any of the other scores, and the entire score is much better than the "mediocre", "bland", or "generic" scores that are being churned out for many big tentpole films now.

I agree with what you said. And it still has a bit of that jazzy swing to the brass and the strong use of clarinet that was evident in TOS.

I hear subtle nods to TMP, TWOK, and TUC in there as well. Not direct lifts of their scores but just lyrical nods here and there.

Overall I think this was a strong outing that may have been "held back" to not come off to "standard trek".

I can confirm the trumpet fanfare is in the film soundtrack for those wondering!

I can also tell you that if you know where to look then the soundtrack is now out there and downloadable! But don't ask me where ;)

Does this mean you will be updating your "opening credits, 2009 style" clip?

Well I just listened to the entire soundtrack.

    It's freakin' SWEET.

Shades of some previous Trek films in places, and some definite John Williams influences in places.

Overall, I can't wait to see this movie.

I was bored with the Dark Knight score, especially since even after 20 years the Danny Elfman score still rang true in my head. I did begin to warm up after hearing it applied to other franchises on youtube, though, and now one or two selections get repeated play on my iTunes.

Back to this new theme, does anybody get a fantastical, whimsically heroic vibe from the first two minutes?

I thought about it, but I think I will wait until I have footage from the movie in my hands.
I would like to add some sweet movie Enterprise shots in there.

I liked the closing credits music on YouTube. Nice that they threw in the theme to the Gauntlet II video game at 7:45.

I'd like to see someone like Giacchino do the soundtrack for, say, the anticipated HALO movie whenever it finally starts filming. The HALO games have an incredible and often-moving, wistful soundtrack that would benefit from a composer like Giacchino.

im with you 100%! with the exception of the tos music i found this kind of bland . nothing really exciting there. giacchino is no goldsmith! or for that matter ... horner.

The one thing I would have liked to have in this closing credits score would have been one straight run through of the Courage theme from fanfare to end. That would have been perfect for the tag end of the credits, where the main theme usually gets restated.
