These sound intriguing; care to elaborate? Around these parts, especially, "Mirror Universe" is pretty much synonymous with Trek; how would you define a "non-Trek" version? Do you mean "non-Starfleet" or something more fundamental?

And how would you define "other sci-fi in Trek roles?" A crossover of franchises or concepts, such as, say, Stargate in Star Trek, or what?

    More, more! We insist! :D

There have been mirror universe stargate episodes before, and yes, there were goatees.

I don't remember any goatees; I do remember a comment that it would be easier to tell if there were goatees.

The problem I see with non-Trek "mirror universe" art is that you need a baseline. With Trek, it's easy - add goatees (which I have to say, look smashing on the babes!) - okay, maybe it takes a bit more, but we see a lot of MU starships and uniforms and even characters, and it's clear what is going on. Stargate has the quantum mirror and numerous other ways of showing us alternate SGCs and Earths, but so far, I haven't seen anything terribly overt, like, say, the entire SG-1 team as Go'a'uld System Lords, robes and all. With other sci-fi, it's even harder - how do we recognize MU hobbits, or other concepts or franchises? I don't see any problems with occasional challenges that go outside Trek, but I think they need to have certain recognizable aspects to provide a basis for judgment; if we get too broad, then we start to lose that ability to judge how well the objectives have been addressed.

Here's a suggestion for something I thought of recently...

If Starfleet built a battlestar, ala Galactica, what would it look like?

I'm sure it would be a lot cleaner than the "bucket." Would it still have the flight pods? Where would the warp engines be? Would it have nacelles?

Well, I finally got a chance to compile a list of our past challenges - at least the ones I can remember or have files for ;) (or can find in the collection of old threads on the server). Rather than clutter up the thread too much, if you have any info about missing challenges, or missing or incorrect winners, please PM me, and I'll update this post. Thanks, all! I hope this helps folks with future decisions ...

Nov 2004 - "An Unexpected Discovery"

Dec 2004 - Trek crossed over with another series [not necessarily sf/f]

Thanks, Klaus! I'm sure if I go back and restore my backed-up e-mails, I'll find all the contests, but I have to figure out where to put all the messages ;). If any of you know more, please let me know, and I'll put your names up there where they belong ;). Thanks!

EDIT: Almost there! I went back through my e-mails, and I'm 90% certain I got the winners right, except, for some reason, I have no e-mails relating to the final poll for July 2005 - the computer interface challenge. We had several entries, and I honestly can't guess from those. Ushaan, do you recall (it was your challenge)? Anyone?

How about a short hiatus? General interest seems to have... waned.

Just thought of this idea on the way home, which might open up the competition a bit and add a bit of fun: A Deck of Trek.

Basically you choose one playing card from a standard deck of 52 cards (plus jokers) and interpret it in a Trek fashion. The Trek element can incoporate the number and suit as an integral part of the design or merely have it emblazoned on top of your own composition. The design itself could be a drawing, 3D model, photoshop - absolutely anything at all. The only constraints would be that the output must be able to be presented in the dimensions of a standard playing card (whatever that is) and that you'd have to state the card you'd chosen at the beginning to avoid duplicates. It would be interesting to see how much of a full deck we would end up playing with. ;)

I've seen this sort of thing being done for charity and the like by celebs (though I'm of course completely unable to find a link) and the results can be extremely varied and imaginative. D'ya think it could work?

i don't know if it's been done before...but how about Star Trek trading cards, with "rookie" cards with photoshopped early photos of our actors with appropriate costume.

Given today's stunning news, I'd say the next Art Contest should be Young Kirk and Spock (in their early to mid 20s). :D

    I have some.

1 Kirk and crew if they were on the Stargate x304 Enterprise.

2 Admiral Calhoun 25 years in New Frontier's future.

3 Vangaurd if it was built in the 2280s.

Just for folks' edification and entertainment, I've started compiling the previous entries for the monthly challenges here (it made as much sense as anywhere, since to know what to suggest, it helps to see what has been done ;)). If you were an entrant for which I have no artwork, feel free to contact me, and I'll update the pages.

Another contest idea, similar to one posted above: A scene from Trek Lit. Rather than just lit-only characters, I'm thinking of scenes that might also involve ships, canon characters, aliens, landscapes, planetary locations, etc.
