"Sometimes that shit comes back around" by Nicky Nicholls

As silently sobbing Norma storms out of the suburbs, she passes by Alex's cubical and nearly knocks Nicky over.

Alex is sitting on her bunk, working on some bead jewelry when Nicky enters with a 2x3 foot poster board covered in potential honeymoon destinations... including Bora, Bora, Bora! In the center of the poster board are the bride and "groom".

Nicky: Yo. Check it out. (chuckles)
Alex: Whoa! You put a lot of work into that. Who knew you were so fucking thoughtful. Jesus.
Nicky: (Is checking out her masterpiece) Yeah. I have my moments. Think she'll like it?
Alex: (Smiles) I don't know if she'll appreciate the groom.

(The "groom" in the black tux is obviously Nicky)

Alex: (President of the lonely hearts club makes an observation) What happened to that iron gate, keeping your heart shut?
    Nicky: It's a JOKE!
    Alex: (disbelieving) Is it?

Nicky doesn't answer... she doesn't have to, her face says it all. So she sits down on the bunk next to Alex, and changes the subject.

Nicky: What are you doing there?

Alex holds the beads on the metal (an opened paper clip?) up to Nicky's ear.

Alex: Making you a pair of earrings.
Nicky: (Tries to push the hand away) You ASSHOLE! That's supposed to be a surprise!

Alex laughs and holds the beaded "earring" up once more.

    Alex: Surprise!

(As Nicky laughs, Alex looks chagrined at her efforts)

    Alex: These Suck!

(she tosses the earring to the side of the bed. )

Alex: God, I'm just not crafty I don't know what to give you.

(Nicky has pulled the poster board up once more to examine it, as Alex reaches out to caress it.)

Nicky: Man, you're right. It should be a boy. Its not funny.

Alex shrugs and smiles, then does a head tilt as if to stretch her neck after a difficult afternoon of stringing 10 beads on a paper clip. Nicky, who had been "without" companionship ever since Morello shut her off a couple months ago, turns to Alex with a suggestion.

Nicky: I think I know what I want for Christmas.
Alex: (Looks away, bored already) Yeah?
Nicky: Yeah. (Her hand is now caressing Alex's thigh.)

Did you know there is actually an article out there, explaining why this next scene just WOULD NOT HAPPEN with 2 lesbians?

AHA! FOUND IT! Took 2 different google searches, but here it is.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tanya-jo-miller/orange-is-the-black-sex-s_b_3685579.html

To be fair to the scene... technically Nicky put the hand on the thigh and Alex placed it elsewhere... :alienblush:

But otherwise I would have to agree with the blogger. That scene wasn't half as sexy as any of the P-A scenes, even when P-A are fighting! (Especially when P-A are fighting? :rommie: ) Not sexy, plus Nicky and Alex don't have any of the chemistry that Piper and Alex have.

    IMO... :p

The old studio system would break it down this way, Taylor Schilling plays Vause's lover, while Natasha Lyonne plays Vause's best friend. (Sans "benefits")

    Don 't believe me?

    Here's the clip.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnxVVm2Ppdg

    [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnxVVm2Ppdg[/yt]

    Hmmm.

I don't think karma has settled with Alex yet... seems like she's got that "silver lining" thing going here, but for how long?

As for Nicky... she's definitely reaping the positive vibes for everything she's tried to do these last few weeks.

Can you believe we're almost done until next year?

No I did not. Maybe I should, but I don't want to sign up for another site, and it wasn't really an error, but more of an omission that could have made the point stronger.

I'd say I was one of those who have never "heard" of it, but then I'd technically be lying.

In one of the reviews I read this summer, the reviewer was begging for a you-tube vid that mashed up Orphan Black and Orange is the New Black, which I thought was pretty presumptuous of him. :rommie:

But of course, if you try hard enough you can find one. ;)

You two will have to tell me if it "makes sense".

It's more "trilogy" than "mashup"... with OUAT, OB & OitNB. I guess we should be thankful they didn't throw OZ into the mix, too?

Boy, watching that makes the whole Swann/Queen thing look very plausible. Neal could be "in trouble" and I'm not just talking about the gunshot.

    Nah... it's network/Disney TV. :guffaw:

    You are so cruel. :rommie:

Everyone knows  she would put it on the end of the pin she uses to affix Chakotay's boutonniere to his chest.

As for Seven... I suspect she has pans for her to visit a holo-program set in Upstate New York, at a little place called Litchfield. :p

"Sometimes that shit comes back around BIG TIME!!!!" by Nicky Nicholls

    From the Teacake Collection:

Red is in the common room where the microwaves are. She's just taken out her "oodles of noodles" cup of soup and we can see she's made a rookie mistake. She didn't put enough water in and when she peels the top back all she sees is the sunken dehydrated tops of the noodle mass.

Can you tell I've eaten these once or twice in my life? ;)

Red looks morose, and I don't think its just the noodles. So she walks over to the dining room and humbly gets in line with the other commoners, clutching her plastic drinking cup and her utensils.

The first thing you notice... the 2nd white woman in the serving line looks disgusted at her, but says nothing.

The next thing you notice is Silent Norma doing everything NOT to look at Red while she puts the bread on the tray, before passing it to the next server.

The next server, the last server, is Maria. She's the lady who gave birth 1+ month ago. SHE stares Red down as she places the tray on top of the glass counter, then boldly slides it down the line AWAY from Red.

    Maria: NEXT.

Red has perpetrated THIS game often enough, she doesn't even quibble. She steps down the line until she comes face to face with Gloria, the NEW Tsar in the Kitchen.

    Red stares at Gloria.

Gloria lifts her eyebrow ever so slightly as she stares back at Red.

    No words are spoken.

    None are needed.

Red very slowly shakes her head...

... before she turns and walks away from her last scene in season 1 of Orange is the New Black.

The scene ends on Gloria's stern face, still staring at the retreating Red before she lets out a minute sigh and turns her eyes back to the serving line.

The power play is over, her team scored and now she has a kitchen to run.

And somewhere, OFF camera we hear a hopeful voice proclaim the good news...

"I got the marriage form. It's all filled out."

This 4 page series of interviews appeared in the Advocate before the show aired, and maybe I read it back then but I don't remember.

I especially like Cox's comments, page 4, about working with Kate Mulgrew & Jodi Foster.

hmmm. Link to the advocate isn't working.

Try this... http://katemulgrew.tumblr.com/page/8 scroll down to the blurb about the Advocate and what Laverne thinks about working with Kate. It links to page 4 of the article.

He's not my type but he looks like a nice person at least!! AND not repulsive, great acting how repulsive he is in Orange. And you know when it was revealed how fucked up his thinking and feelings really were not one drop of sympathy was wrung, even though we are clearly looking at a very damaged person.

And somewhere, OFF camera we hear a hopeful voice proclaim the good news...

"I got the marriage form. It's all filled out."

Piper is smiling as she stands at the prison phone bank.

Larry is on his cell while walking freely down a street in the (presumably) Park Slope section of NYC. No snow, no hat, just his jacket & scarf, oh, and he's not smiling.

    Larry: Good. Good.

Piper looks over her shoulder at the guard standing nearby, and lowers her voice.

    Piper: If I make it.

Larry: (slightly incredulous) If you make it?

Piper: Someone's trying to kill me, a Christian Meth head.

You didn't forget that message rat, did you?

Larry: (More incredulous) Someone ELSE is trying to kill you?

Umm, Larry... did you ever ask Piper why she has a new room mate? Because her OLD room mate tried to strangle a tall young female corrections officer who asked her where her badge was and why she had on non-regulation nail polish. :klingon:

Piper: Hey. Its not my fault. I didn't ask for this. It just...

Larry: It just happened? It happened. The DRAMA happened to find you...

Umm Yeah, Larry. Don't you remember telling her brother Cal, just a couple weeks ago, that PIPER was the MOST interesting part of your life. Its BECAUSE things HAPPEN to her!

Larry: ... like it always does. Because you NEED it.

He turns off the sidewalk alongside a wrought iron fence before someone's brownstone.

Piper: (She looks puzzled) Where did THAT come from?

Larry: (He leans against the fence, nonchalantly) I met Alex.

Piper's hand clutches at the wall phone to steady her trembling body. Her eyes close as if in prayer before she dares to ask...

Piper: What do you mean... you "met" Alex?

She opens her eyes as she steels herself for his response.

Larry: I wanted to tell her to stay away. Uhhh, I wanted her to see that I was a REAL person that she was hurting.

Right... you wanted to tell this woman who HELPED RUN THE HEROIN IMPORT BUISNESS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL DRUG CARTEL that she was hurting you. Hell Larry, don't you REALIZE that she could easily find someone in her organization that could ASSASINATE you if she wanted???

Geeze Louise, how clueless can one yuppie get?

Larry: But... actually Piper, YOU were the one doing all the hurting.

Piper: (A slight strident tone creeps in) Whatever she said is a lie, Larry.

Piper, Piper, Piper. You've know Alex for how long? You know she'll mix enough truths into any story that only the most discerning listener will notice the un-truths. And after Healy's phone call to Larry on Thanksgiving, we KNOW he is NOT a discerning listener.

Piper: She is a crazy, manipulative liar. This is unbelievable. (Now a reproachful note joins the chorus) I can't believe you didn't trust me to handle this on my own!

Well now, Piper. Since going to prison you have become a tad untrustworthy. You never mentioned Alex was in there with you the first couple weeks, then you never told him about your physical and emotional intimacy with her until he asked "Are you STILL having sex with her / Do you love her?"

(We'll leave his complicity in all this at the side for now.)

    Larry: No. I didn't. I didn't. And doesn't that say so much?

And now the man that supposedly makes his living with words... takes to quoting themes from Alex AND his Father to explain his decision.

Larry: I can't be on your ride anymore.

Piper's face tells all. She is in SHOCK!

Larry: I don't think we share the same values. Why was I in such a hurray {to wed}? Because I was AFRAID. You... you shouldn't be with someone out of fear.

Piper is incredulous. Her entire world is spinning out of control. The ground is cracking open, threatening to swallow her whole.

Piper: (softly) no. no. (slightly louder) No. No. No.

Piper gestures as if he can see her.

Larry: (he's resolute.) I'm sorry... I... (shakes his head) Bye Piper.

Piper: (tears are in her eyes, and in her voice) No, Larry.

    He ends the call.

    He looks shocked.

The hand holding her phone drops it...

Piper: (To no-one there) No. No.

...and she starts to hyperventilate as she slides down the wall to the floor.

    *

Scene switches to the white suburbs where Nicky is still sitting on Alex's bed, but is keeping her hands to herself. I don't think Nicky was satisfied :alienblush: with Alex's "secret Santa" present, since Alex is still working on those damned bead earrings.

Alex is laughing with Nicky until she hears a woman run into the room.

    Piper: ALEX!

Piper's righteous INDIGNATION melts too quickly (for my tastes) in the face of Alex's ANGER.

Alex: Are you kidding me. GET OUT.

    Piper: (Milk-toast) Alex...

How long has Alex waited, to say these words to Piper. What did I accuse Larry of, after Thanksgiving? An eye for an eye... a HEART for a HEART.

Alex: Get OUT. No Fucking Way!!! :scream:

Piper just stands there, swaying from the emotional beating she's just received from two of the few people in the world she can say she truly loved.

    Alex: Get OUT!

Nicky has been sitting there quietly, intermittently grinning at the ring side seat she has for this circus, when she decides to put her 2 cents in.

    Nicky: You heard "the lady".

Nicky motions for Piper to leave.

Piper is still swaying from the earthquakes rattling her world but she turns and silently walks away.

The camera hones in on Alex's face, until even the hardened criminal can no longer look the world in the eye and drops her gaze.

    I SOOOOO don't agree with #3!!!!!!!!!!

Or #1, regarding the "revenge in mind" :brickwall:

or #5 regarding Tiffany getting transferred. I don't think TPTB will transfer someone upgraded to series regular.

and I don't care if #4 is true of not. :p

I DO care whether we see MORE of Gloria Mendoza next year. (Current Tsar of the kitchen.) :)

Oh, I looked at her other pieces written on the show on this website...and my opinion is "eh". Take em or leave em.

My biggest disagreement is her "take on the men" in the show being universally painted as "bad".

The superhero, of course, is Miss Claudette's Jean Baptiste.

I like (the writer does not) Brother Calvin Chapman.

Polly's husband, Peter Harper, seems like a good sort.

There are a number of male guards, white and black in the background, that seem to be doing their jobs without selling drugs to the prisoners OR having sex with them. The only guy who's name I know is Donaldson who rescued Piper from Tiffany in the shower confrontation.

Well, to be fair, since the Humanists weigh in, I guess we need to let in their opposite number...

I have to admit, I don't agree with half the comments in this article. I know, I know... I see many positive aspects of this show differently from Ms Mcclay BECAUSE I believe it. Just like she sees the negative aspects of the show's take on religion because SHE believes it exists.

    More's the pity. :sigh:

Just a few points/asides before we start this next scene.

According to wiki... John Newton was born in 1725. His mother died in 1731 of TB. His father was a sailor and so was frequently away from home. For a time he was placed in a boarding school where he was "abused". Eventually he had a stepmother who was described as "emotionally distant". At the age of 11, he went to sea as an apprentice, with his father. When he was older, he was "pressed" into the service of the Royal Navy and eventually deserted. He ultimately joined a slave ship where he was known for his profane ways/rhymes and his fights. As punishment he was nearly starved to death (Shades of Red Reznikov) imprisoned/chained at sea and sold off to work a plantation in Sierra Leone.

His father intervened at Newton's request, and he was released from the plantation. He joined another slaving ship and again was known for his "linguistic skills". In fact his Captain... "admonished (Newton) several times for not only using the worst words the captain had ever heard, but creating new ones to exceed the limits of verbal debauchery..." Reportedly over his lifetime"... he had not only neglected his faith but directly opposed it, mocking others who showed theirs, deriding and denouncing God as a myth."

Sounds like he'd fit in the Ladies from Litchfield, don't you think?

Just as he was about to finally Captain his own "non-slaving" ship, he was forced due to illness to give up the sea completely.

Now... if, like me, you didn't know this guy's name... I'm sure you are wondering why I am bringing him up.

Simply put... because Poussey, accent a droit! likes his music.

And on a completely DIFFERENT note...

I LOVE the fact that in the Christmas Pageant, the baby Jesus was represented by a yellow Teddy Bear. :bolian:
