I heard rumors a while back that a Flash Gordon reboot film was in the works. If so, I thought I'd throw out my Casting Wish List...(and this is my attempt at using current actors to mimic the cast from the 1980 film. OK, here goes: Flash Gordon: Chris Hemsworth (Yes, I know, he's in everything now, but so what...looks enough like Sam Jones to me.) Dr. Hans Zarkov: A full-bearded Ben Afleck. (Hey, why not?) Dale Arden: Megan Fox Ming the Merciless: Ben Kingsley or Tom Hardy Princess Aura: Mila Kunis Prince Vultan: Gerald Butler Prince Barin: Clive Owen Klytus: William Dafoe Prince of Ardentia: (minor roll) Peter Mensah (messenger in '300') Kala: Lena Headey Vultan's right hand man: Charlie Hunnam What do you all think?
Coming from the guy that suggested Affleck. Flash: Chris Evans Dale: Zarkov: Eddie Izzard Ming: Liam Neeson Prince Baron: Michael Fassbender (my "go to" actor for any fantasy casting right now) Vultan: Nicholas Cage Aura: Olivia Wilde
aside from Cage that would be a great cast. not sure who i would pick for Dale either. certainly not Megan Fox.
Are you kidding? Nic Cage is perfect for such an over the top part. He's one of the few people I can see pulling off, "Hawkmen! DIIIIVE!!!!"
Ming the Merciless: Catherine Zeta-Jones. Flash Gordon: Chad Michael Murray Dr. Hans Zarkov: John Rhys Davies Dale Arden: Cassidy Freeman Princess Aura: Emma Watson Prince Vultan: Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson Prince Barin: Lee Pace.
My reboot would be much like the Alex Ross comic Zeitgeist - mixing the best elements of the 1980 film with the original 1930's comics, adding a huge fx budget (hence a not-quite-all-star cast) and keeping at least the Queen theme to go with the epic Howard Shore score (who better? After all, the LOTR composer did it with Queen the first time)... Flash Gordon: Channing Tatum Dale Arden: Lizzy Caplan Hans Zarkov: Alex Veadov Ming the Merciless: John Turturro Princess Aura: Renee Olstead Prince Barin of the Treemen: Luke Evans Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen: Gerard Butler Prince Thun of the Lionmen: Daniel Bryan King Kala of the Sharkmen: John Cena Queen Fria of Frigia: Sarah Gadon Klytus: Guy Pearce General Ziva (Kala in the 1980 movie): Noomi Rapace
Thank you, Nightowl1701, for including Thun....my favorite from the 80's cartoon & the movie serials. i'd like to see a few thigns switched up...like maybe having either Dale or even Flash not be white. With Ming...i hate to go back to ethnic stereotype...but Byron Mann pulled off a great charismatic leader in Man with The Iron Fists...so he'd be good as Ming, i think. isn;t there a queen of Frigia? It'd be funny/interesting if someone ethnic did whiteface fo rit. (But i guess no one might care...Jesse Rath's been doing it on Defiance).
I had a change of Heart. Ming the Merciless: Laurence Fishburn. Flash Gordon: Mehcad Brooks Dr. Hans Zarkov: Jaleel White Dale Arden: Dana Davis Princess Aura: Rihanna Prince Vultan: Idris Elba Prince Barin: D.B. Woodside Klytus: Joe Morton General Ziva (Kala in the 1980 movie): Lisa Bonet. ... To make this list I had to enter the phrase "Large black Men" into Google.
You people are way overthinking this. Just cast Eddie Murphy. Have him play all the parts. Or split 'em up between him and Jack Black. BOOM. Done.
This was kind of hard, especially since I watch more movies from the 1930s than I do from the 21st century. It was hard for me to think of a blond heroic kind of actor. The guy who plays Jason on True Blood is hot and blond, but his character is such an idiot that it's tough to imagine him as Flash. Same with Chris Pine. The obvious choice is Chris Evans, but he's already played two heroic types. So for Flash I had to give a dark-haired actor a dye job. Zarkov and Ming were also tough, because they also require very specific ethnic types. So here's what I got: Flash - Jensen Ackles Dale - Seychelle Gabriel Zarkov - Saul Rubinek (or maybe Christopher Heyerdahl) Ming - Daniel Dae Kim (or maybe Naveen Andrews) Aura - Anna Silk Barin - Sam Witwer Vultan - John Rhys-Davies
I think the idea of rebooting FLASH GORDON ... is cool. It lends itself very easily to even more of the kind of fun and excitement the STAR TREK reboots have given us.
