Who are the powers that be you're referring to?

If you want to believe that Star Trek fan films had a small impact on Paramount's decision to launch a big screen reboot of the original characters, that strikes me as plausible. But if you want to believe that fan films were anything more than a minor reason for Paramount's decision to sink $150 million (plus prints and advertising) on a big screen reboot, that's crazy.

After the collapse of Rick Berman's version of the franchise, a reboot was a forgone conclusion. CBS certainly wasn't going to let one if its most lucrative properties go to waste. That said reboot chose to use the most popular characters in the franchise (i.e. Kirk, Spock, etc.) is hardly surprising, either.

I have no doubt that fanfilms played zero part in the Trek reboot. Paramount has a property that's made them tons of money in the past, and even though it was diminishing returns in the previous decade, they obviously understood its potential and when they saw a potentially good pairing with Abrams, they smartly went for it.

Agreed, and I would suggest that claims to the contrary on the part of people associated with the new film are saying so purely for PR purposes.

On the bright side, at least they are aware of fan films.

Well, since they said it privately, I'd disagree. But I'll leave it at that - people are going to believe what they choose to, despite what JJ and CBS has said to anyone.

We just cast J.G. Hertzler (Martok in DS9) as the main villain 'Borrada'.

You sound like a man with a plan! :techman: Just donations have slowed since a VERY fast start - contacts on standby? :klingon:

I think if a goal is not reached then all the money your donators pledge does not go through to the production.

I'm really curious how "Renegades" is getting around the CBS prohibition against raising money to fund a production. Insight would help us all.

And now they've added Monica Keena to the cast (although, the announcement sadly neglects to mention Undeclared). I can't wait to see this thing.
