I found a channel on YT featuring full rough cuts of TNG episodes, digitized from VHS tapes. These are the temporary cuts before the final ones, having no post production effects included (no sound effects, no visual effects).

You can hear the original athmosphere on the sets during the shooting. Especially "funny" are the scenes in 10-forward, where all the extras are moving their mouths but dont say a single word. ;)

I wonder: How are the environmental sounds like hall or sliding doors filtered out, so they even are not heard when the actor is talking at the same time?

Yes, these are the same ones profiled on TrekCore here: http://trekcore.com/blog/tag/extended-episode/

ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). A typical Berman-Era Star Trek episode averaged about 150 lines of ADR.

Does that mean the actors re-record their lines in a recording studio and then have the lines dubbed in again?

I've noticed a lot of CW shows seem to do this too. All the dialogue seems much crisper than you'd expect given the environments they are in.

That must suck. Going through all the trouble of getting your inflections right, just for the sound to be tossed. In the end, all that matters is that you have the correct lip movement, right?

It's cases like this where we see just how important good sound designers, foley artists and ADR are.

I know when Leone made his westerns like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, he didn't record sound at all. Also, everyone spoke their native language during the shoot, since it didn't matter. So only Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef actually spoke English on the shoot. It was up to English sound guys to dub the other actors, and try to choose words that matched the lip movements.

In the case where an on set sound is heard in the on set dialogue recording (or if the dialogue recording has other issues for whatever reason); they bring the actor in and have him re-record the dialogue in a recording studio (often watching the scene so he can do his best to match the original lip movement/timing) - so they can get a clean recording of the lines they need. (In the industry, it's called 'looping')

    Edited to add:
[Doh - replied before I read the rest of the thread and saw this was already answered.]

Bahahaha, when the Cardassian sits down next to O'Brien in Ten Forward. :guffaw:They should have left these sounds of the rubber suit in.

A concern has been raised about the reaction of CBS to these YouTube links being posted here. We're researching the issue but I wanted to advise the interested party that we may be forced to close this thread and delete the links in the near future. We realize that they are only links to content posted elsewhere but CBS has been known to be fairly brutal in cases such as this including both the individual poster and the website.

I don't know if it's lag or a dubbing problem, but Netflix's versions of 30 Rock often have long stretches of 'lag' of about .2 of a second. It's so distracting at times as to make me fast forward.

Don't let them fool you, CBS has absolutely no case here. They need to deal with Youtube and the guy who uploaded the vids. Not with people linking to it.

    I like the door chime:
    "Ding dong."

They should have used that one!

These are fascinating vids, thanks for posting Salinga!

The guy who alerted me is the webmaster of another significant Trek site with personal experience in this area. I don't take his advice lightly.

He's right. People who link have no liability. The only thing that will happen is that CBS will ask Youtube to remove the material and that will be it. If anything happens after that (a C&D), it will be a friendly and be directed towards the person who originally uploaded the material.

Torrents are one thing. Youtube is another.

I only watched a little bit of The Wounded, I enjoyed the small extended sequences. They were interesting because as much as I love that show, there are some jarring cuts.

    Indeed.

No case whatsoever with linking to a YT video.

I wonder why TrekCore didn't report the appearance of the extended cut of "Sins Of The Father". It has been on YouTube for weeks now without anyone taking notice!
