Does anyone remember that movie Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend? I remember bawling at that movie when I was a young little gaffer.
King Kong. (The original, of course.) C'mon, tell me you didn't choke up when Kong was dying atop the Empire State Building.
The recent version of Les Miserables is the saddest movie I can recall. It took no little resolve to maintain a vestige of stoicism in the face of its near-relentless emotional wallop. Peter Jackson's King Kong has one of the saddest endings in recent memory, in which the mighty beast is brought low. Many great little nuances to that scene.
Testament to the movies power and importance is that when it airs in Germany on private channels it's always without commercials.. always. It's the only movie i know of that plays commercial free on non-pay TV stations here.
Yes, I was gutted. I really had a thing for Kong when I was a kid, we watched that movie at least once a year. The remakes had zero emotional resonance for me. If I see any of it now it I'm right back to being a kid tearing up and feeling helpless outrage. I remember I hadn't seen it in years and I was at some bar with a bunch of hipster types.. they were playing the original King Kong against the wall with a band playing in the same room, so no sound. It was someone's birthday and I could not stop watching King Kong and I got incredibly irritated at how everyone thought it was funny! One I never understood as sad was The Notebook. Everyone was always saying how incredibly sad it was, I didn't think there was anything sad about it at all. Couple lives a long and varied and happy life together and then it ends in old age.
The opening of UP. The rest of the movie doesn't keep to tone, thankfully, but those opening minutes are heart wrenching.
Yeah, that was my response as a kid as well. Willis O'Brien really milked the pathos of Kong's final moments.
I just watched The Parks of Being a Wallflower earlier tonight. I loved the book, but it didn't elicit the same emotional reaction that the movie did. I had to ring the tears out of my beard I was crying so hard! Also, The Family Stone. So sad.
