For this month's challenge I've selected the theme of 'Clichés', or more specifically, Star Trek chicles. We all know and love Star Trek, but over the course of four decades there have been certain scenarios that have arisen so many times that they've become well known Star Trek clichés. I'd like participants to select an established Star Trek cliche and use it as the basis for their story - perhaps have a little fun with it, turn it on its head, whatever you like! I've included a few of the more obvious examples below, courtesy of Ex Astris Scientia. Reset button. Holodeck safeties. Insane admirals. Transporter malfunction. Functional ancient technology. Lost Earth colonies. Only one survivor. http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/inconsistencies/cliches1.htm Now for the science bit... * 10,000 words or less. * Original piece of work * Closing time is midnight at the end of this month.
A very interesting idea. Though the list would definately need to include: phenomena that affects all crew except one
Angry Fanboy Thanks Bry! Yeah this one has the potential to be a bit of fun I think, maybe even write something that includes as many Star Trek clichés as possible?
Nice theme (although I think we had this before, but then again, by now we've probably had most themes). Don't forget to post your winning entry in the winning entries thread stickied at the top of the forum. Also, you might want to add midnight in what timezone to your deadline.
Angry Fanboy I'm glad you all seem to like the theme! Looking forward to reading all your entries should you chose to take part!
Here's my cliche-ridden entry: "And In The Quiet Heart Lies Hidden" http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=7248349#post7248349 Enjoy!
So, the deadline is approaching quickly. Is anyone else working on something? Would be nice if we could have a couple of entries like last month.
Everyone runs a mile when Fanboy sets a challenge, whatever time of year. They did it last time as well.
Angry Fanboy To be honest I'm not entirely sure what is wrong with the challenges I've set - admittedly we ran into a bit of an issue with the word limit for the 'Abandoned' one earlier in the year, but I genuinely thought this 'turn a cliché on its head' one would be an interesting and enjoyable for those taking part.
Forgive my jocularity. For what it's worth there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the topic you've chosen.
