I would suggest a letter goes to CBS/Paramount mentioning the duration of part 1 and 2 - noting they do not exceed 30 minutes in total - and that this is a pre-existing student film starring George Takei which was being finished as a labour of love as the new rules came in...

I think it is key not to "ask permission" to complete it by the end of the year but to check they have "no objection" to you completing it by the end of the year.

A very short letter seeking no objection can be waived through easier than a permission request amidst all the paperwork in a big HQ like CBS/Paramount.

No chance the serial numbers can be filed off of this, a la Renegades?

It's already been filmed. Difficult to undo everything you've photographed.

Looking at the pictures available, the uniforms aren't quite the same as classic Trek and they don't use the Starfleet arrowhead symbol. The andorian and klingon may be problematic, and that's clearly a classic Enterprise bridge set. The CG can be redone so the Yorktown doesn't immediately resemble a Trek ship. And, depending on the dialogue and plot, some words like "Starfleet" and "Klingon" can be cut or re-dubbed.

It may not be possible, but I thought it worth suggesting.

I would suggest respectful diplomacy with CBS / Paramount first before such drastic editing ?

That would mean completely reshooting a load of scenes and if you want to keep the 80s stuff cutting out names i.e. 'Klingon' and 'Sulu'.

It would be good if it can be released as intended. I believe John Atkin wants to negotiate just the thing with CBS

Honestly this was the only fan film I had any real interest in. Like many I first learned about it years ago in that Starlog article.

I think you are taking the best approach right now. Talk to CBS before making drastic changes. Most of the work has already been done hard to adjust it now.

Also you are forgetting George was not the only one who worked on official Trek who worked on this. Didn't Andy Probert design one of the ships?

Andy designed at least three ships for the show as I recall.

He designed 3 ships - U.S.S. Yorktown, Klingon K-Fighter, and S.H.A.R.K. shuttle (the Nagear).

According to John Van Citters, in-progress fan films can be completed and released. And this one's been "in progress" for quite some time :)

I would still almost recommend that you create the second little short video describing some element of making the movie, or a couple of outtakes if you've got any, or something. I know you're allowed to finish now, without that, and that is AWE-SOME , but I think it would be nice if even the fan films already in progress honor as many of the guidelines as they possibly can without hacking up their work. Sort of a way to show appreciation to CBS/P for being magnanimous, and also that the non-Axanar fandom is willfully cooperative.

I'm coming to Yorktown very late, but I'm actually glad I am because it means I don't have to wait so long to see it. Everything looks very cool and I can hardly wait. :)

Right now we are in the middle of editing the film and completing the VFX. Yorktown is currently taking up most of the memory on my computer. We are still aiming to have it finished by Dec 2016.

Shuttlecraft approaching the USS Yorktown. Seems friendly enough.
