Vulcan point of view - "We told the humans they were not ready. We told them not to push out into the far reaches of space and make their presence known. They got themselves into this. We will not fight a war they should not have started." Didn't the Andorians help in a different conflict when Vulcan did nothing? I remember Sharan bringing that up a couple times.
They did rendezvous with Enterprise's Convoy and refilled their antimatter, but I got the feeling that humanity had deliberately isolated itself. If there were 3 convoys with around 5000 humans aboard each, comprising the remnants of humanity it seems odd that they weren't offered sanctuary on Vulcan. So why weren't they? My guess is that they were, but that they turned it down in favour of heading for Ceti Alpha, because they thought it was less likely the Xindi would find them there, protecting both the remains of humanity and whoever gave them shelter. Think about it - every human colony had been attacked by the Xindi so they deliberately isolated themselves from the galaxy at large, not wanting to put their allies in danger. Of course I may be giving humanity too much credit!
More than that... From "Carbon Creek", evidently the Vulcans have been around Earth since the 1950s. Yet they did nothing to help as Earth nearly destroyed itself in The Eugenics Wars and World War III and all that. What, the Vulcan Prime Directive of Non-Interference? The Vulcans would have really sat on the sidelines as humanity wiped itself out?
Why not? Anyway, there's no evidence within Star Trek that humanity has ever come that close to wiping itself out in any war. The situation portrayed in First Contact certainly doesn't suggest that our WW III exactly devastated the United States, for example. At most it looks like government and the overall economy may have deteriorated, but given that the action takes place in Montana we really can't even be sure of that.
Didn't someone quote six hundred million dead in the film? Based on population growth, that would represent less than ten percent of the population in the 2050's.
Right. But that's knowing after the fact. Once the nukes start flying and WWIII is on, how did the Vulcans know it'd stop before total annihilation? Is it a matter of degree? 600 million dead, they just sit back and watch. When it hits two billion dead, then they'd intervene? Either way, WWIII or Eugenics Wars or Xindi attack, looks like the Vulcans will let whatever play itself out for planet Earth.
As far as World War III goes, what would you have the Vulcans do? Come in and take over? Destroy our ability to make war? There are some thing that a species must learn on their own.
The Vulcans were willing to help, when asked. Soval and company do come to the Enterprise Convey's aid and Soval even tells how the High Command sent ships to a Human colony that was requesting Vulcan help, but by the time they got there there was nothing left. So, I'm also of the opinion that Humanity was deliberately isolating itself.
