    Here's a clue:

Peter David took half the time to tell this story than he usually does.

This might give it away, here is another clue:

The blurb on the cover reads:
Captain Calhoun must face his own dark past!

^Well, that rules out my guess. The "half the time" clue made me think it was the NF short novel in Mirror Universe: Obsidian Alliances, but Calhoun isn't a captain there and it doesn't have a specific one-line blurb on the cover.

You have the right line of thinking there with the length of the book

Then you lost me. That's the only NF work I can think of at that length (there were the original four really short ones, but those were even shorter).

Since there were four of them, I figure they were more like quarter-length. If even that, considering that full-length Trek novels back then were generally shorter than they are now.

I'm willing to cede the floor; not only am I very busy right now, but I don't think I really deserve credit for guessing the quote.

Nah. It's one of the IKS Gorkon books, but I'm not sure which one.

So if no one has guessed it yet, how about a clue?
