Looks good to me. Pleased that he's a "fanboy" choice. Rare such happens. Lots of people had been suggesting him.

My one true hope is that he goes bulky for the role. It's something I think Superman needs. Routh didn't have it enough, IMO. Dean Cain was decent, Tom Welling is decent now days, Reeve was decent.

It's too bad John Hamm is too old, even by his own admission. I hope they cast him as Jor'El though. That would just be smart. Damn smart.

If only Hamm had some fame 15 years ago, maybe we would have had a late 1990s Supes with him. Ah well.

EDIT: looks appropriate here http://cdn.buzznet.com/media/jj1/2008/01/cavill-dunhill/henry-cavill-dunhill-16.jpg -- most photos fo him, he looks to skinny. Cheeks almost sunken or something, you know?

I haven't seen him in anything but from a few photos he looks the part. I'm interested to see who they're going to pick as Lois.

Tom Welling is a decent Clark Kent. My problem is that I just can't buy him as Superman. He's spent SOOOO long portraying one aspect of the character that I can't see him as a convincing Superman.

I could get into pretty everyone, but Elizabeth Banks is nearly a decade older than Cavill and by the time a sequel or two comes out, she'll be too old I daresay. My favorites at this point would be Rachel McAdams or Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Zooey Deschanel is one of my favorites, but for some reason I can't see her in the role.

If it were a few years ago and we were on or 2nd or 3rd movie, Zooey's sister Emily would be an interesting choice.

Elizabeth Banks looks young enough to be in her mid twenties which Lois probably would be in this movie.

I remember when Chris Reeve was cast as Superman, some of the first photos circulated of him made him look like the 99-lb weakling in the Charles Atlas comic book ads, but he bulked up. And Michael Keaton wasn't exactly an Arnold either.

I continue to be amazed at some of the downright hostile posts I'm seeing (not necessarily here but on some of the entertainment blogs that allow anonymous posting). I saw Cavill called a terrorist on one - I'm not making that up - and a porn star on another (because people show their boobs in the Tudors). But of course it's all about the fact the guy is British.

Have none of these people ever actually read Superman? The guy was an all-American hero, yes, but he was an immigrant who America adopted, when it came right down to it. And even if all people know of Superman is from the movies, did any of them actually listen during the Krypton scenes of the first Superman film? Everyone was British, for heaven's sake - even Brando put on an accent. Susannah York played his mom! Zod was Terrance Stamp. Sarah Douglas was Ursa. When they made Supergirl all the Argo City people were Brits. By rights Christopher Reeve, Helen Slater and Brandon Routh could have played their characters with British accents and it would have been totally correct.

Now whether Cavill can handle the role, that remains to be seen (though I have two words to give the naysayers who plan to spend the next couple years railing against him sight unseen: Daniel Craig). But going after him because he wasn't born in Kansas is just dumb, I'm sorry.

I agree. The guy's about 5 years older than Chris Reeve was when he played Superman, and he's still technically playing Superboy. The Smallville continuity should be left on its own; if I'm going to see a Superman movie, I'd like it to be closer to the original concept.

As for who should play Lois Lane, it's a shame Winona Ryder is a bit too old to play the part (yikes!, I just found out she turns 40 this year. I remember seeing her in films like Beetlejuice when she (and I) was still a teenager). When she was drawn as Lois Lane in DC's recent Superman: Secret Origin mini-series I thought she was perfect. If I had to pick someone for the part today, I'd choose Emily Deschenal from Bones.

^ I think it's outrageous that they didn't audition any Kryptonians for the role.

Seriously though, as regards the physique, let's not forget that when Christian Bale was cast as Batman, he'd just come off The Machinist, where he was skeletal.

Speaking of which, he's apparently a little underwhelmed in his response to this casting:

Slater, yeah, since her character was raised by Kryptonians. But since Clark Kent was raised from infancy by a Kansas family, and presumably learned to speak from them, your argument makes no sense for him. Accents aren't genetic. (Although of course it makes even less sense that Kryptonians would speak English at all, let alone with an English accent.)

I don't like any of the suggestions I've heard for Lois. People are picking glamour babes, and that's not the most important factor in casting Lois Lane (as the example of the achingly gorgeous but totally miscast Kate Bosworth should make clear). Lois should be cast for personality first, that hard-driving, fast-talking, Rosalind Russell/Kate Hepburn type. Erica Durance nails it. Dana Delany nailed it. Margot Kidder did it pretty well. Teri Hatcher kinda did when she wasn't being all weepy and neurotic.

The casting pool for Lois should ideally lean more heavily toward comediennes than glamour babes. Actresses who have sass and energy and attitude, who know how to put expression and intensity into their voices.

^ Shame Tina Fey already basically played the role in Megamind. She's too old for Cavill too, I suppose.

On reflection, though, of the actresses I've heard mentioned, I think Olivia Wilde or Rachel McAdams could kind of pull it off, judging from their performances in House and Sherlock Holmes respectively. But there's got to be someone better.

Why dont we just skip Lois from this adventure. Having no romance angle in the story would open up lots of screen time for more entertaining aspects of the character. Of course demographics will say you have to have a romance but bah on demographics. Now lets get the villian casting announcement.

I don't think you can take Lois out of Superman. I mean, she's not like Batman's random romances or Iron Man's or even Spider-Man. She is integral to the Superman mythos, more so than any Superhero romantic interest. To me, she even rises above romantic interest. In many ways she is Superman's equal and at the very least, she's his partner more than any other really.

Shame Linday Lohan's life and career are in such disarray. I actually think with a hair-dye job, she might have been capable of giving a decent enough performance as Lois. Plus she's even got a comic character type name.

Hmm... interesting thought. She was great in Mean Girls and I think if she didn't self implode after that, she may have grown into a very capable actress. She seems to have a take charge quality and a lot of spunk that I relate with Lois, but like you say, she's in disarray and I don't think she's a capable actress anymore.

^ She's probably capable but no studio or insurance company would take the risk, particularly with such a huge tentpole event movie.

Superman: You got the sniffles, Lois?

    Lois: <sniff> No.

Superman: Seem a little high strung.

Lois: Hey fuck you, Clark! What the hell is that supposed to <sniff> mean?

    Superman: Oh nothing.

Lois: Don't you have some nuns or kids that need saving?

Superman: Nope. Not at the mo....<hears somebody calling for help> Oh wait! I'll be right back, Lois!

    Lois: Thought he'd never leave...<as she takes a bump>

Superman: I HEARD THAT!!! <as he flies away>

Same here- I LOVED Brandon Routh as Superman/Clark, and thought that he managed to act amazingly as both people-kind when he needed to be, and hard WHEN he has to be-not like the way most guys are in movies today. But everybody called him 'gay' due to the way he was in the movie and also due to the design of the costume-misplaced homophobia strikes again.

MY fear is that we will be getting a 'Wolverine' Superman, or an 'Arnold' Superman that is overly macho and tough, with a mindless plot consisting of Superman fighting a giant alien bug, just like Kevin Smith wanted.:vulcan::(

Lindsay Lohan is a complete frack-up, and needs to get an education, as well as a lot of other things, first before she acts again.

    My choices for Lois Lane

    *Mia Kirchner

    *Ashley Tisdale

    *Lacey Chabert

    *Scarlett Johansson

    *Jewel Staite

    *Summer Glau

    *Eliza Dushku

*Sarah Michelle Gellar (if she wasn't so old)

*Kristen Stewart (will give her a chance to make up for being Bella Swan)

*Thora Birch ('cause she needs the fame just as much as Scarlett got!)
