Why didn't Sarek defend his wife?

Having a human mother put Spock at a disadvantage in Vulcan society because Vulcan dismissiveness and meanness toward her heightened his awareness that he lived on a planet of flaming assholes.

But its been show that Spock is the equal and possibly the superior to full blooded Vulcans. So any doubts by the Vulcan Priestess or who ever programmed the computer (Didn't Amanda slip that question in?) come from their own prejudices and misconceptions, not from Spock's physiology/biology/whatever. Spock's real struggle isn't controling his "human half" but finding a place where he "fits in". Where he can be Spock and not the Hybrid or the Freak. Vulcan was obviously not that place ( as seen in Yesteryear and ST09 and TMP)

 

For all their vaunted logic, Vulcans may be one of the most racist species we have ever seen in Trek.

 

He hasn't been shown to have greater emotional control, though. On the contrary, he has always had a more difficult time due to his human half.

The Vulcan Science Elder (or whatever his name was) simply said, "You have surpassed the expectations of your instructors, your final record is flawless" ... and... "It is truly remarkable, Spock, that you have achieved so much despite your limitations." It's not like he was telling "yo mamma" jokes. For a Vulcan, he was being complimentary.

The Vulcan Priestess mind melded with Spock and saw that Vger was stirring his human half and Amanda simply said, "You're half human, Spock. The computer knows that."

Neither was speaking from personal prejudice.

 

But if Vulcan society was *truly* logical, they would not have the obvious anti-human racial prejudice that they do. And thus Spock's human half should not be a problem if that was the case.

Whatever happened to Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations? If the Vulcans truly believed in that, then they would not consider humanity a limitation.

And the disgust in her voice was noticeable. Ironic, given that she was a priestess of Kolinahr, and thus should not have even a shred of emotion. But not only is she obviously ticked off when she mentions Spock's human half, she beams with PRIDE when she talks about Vulcan logic...

 

It isn't anti-human prejudice to recognize that Spock's half human biology makes him more prone to emotionalism. This is a society that values non-emotionalism. Sarek certainly didn't seem discriminated against because he married a human... in fact, he seemed to be quite prominent.

They consider emotion a limitation in Vulcans. Spock was applying for entry into the Vulcan Science Adacemy. He was being judged as a Vulcan by Vulcan standards.

She is a Kolinahr Priestess. Kolinahr is the Vulcan ritual to shed all emotions. Do you find it unusual that she would value logic over emotion?

I didn't see any emotionalism in the actress' performance. She certainly never showed disgust or acted "ticked off."

 

No, but she clearly *displays* emotion while claiming to reject it.

 

Which is why, in early drafts of the script, the Narada was called the Preparation-V.

 

How many Vulcan have we seen a lot of? I recall that both T'Pol and Tuvok ( the only other series regulars who are Vulcan) had emotional control issues. Sarek admits to a loss of control on matters concerning his son. Then you there is Sybok and V'tosh ka'tur. Stonn showed some control issues too.

The Elder was being a jerk. He was making a comment about Spock's background. "Yo'mama's so human...."

Actually if the script is correct she was asking him if V'Ger was stirring his human half.

Like his "Vulcan" emotions have????

As for Amanda, I think she was indulging in some wishful thinking. (Mothers have that perogative)

I think she's always wanted Spock to be a little more "human".
