I always just vaguely assumed that Spock's skin was supposed to have that weird tint to it, but now I'll always wonder if Spock wears make up. Thanks for that lol
TOS era Kirk is beefy, and a bigger man than is fashionable now, but he doesn't look flabby to me. He looks pretty firm and attractive to me. I always like when Kirk takes his shirt off :P

Well, I'm not going to call TOS-era Shatner gross or anything, but I kind of would have preferred it if he kept it shirt on more, and maybe if Spock took his clothes off more often.

    :guffaw:
Haha, yeah. I agree that he's not attractive with the shirt off. Still, I think it's hilarious how often his shirt gets ripped off, so I can at least appreciate it for that reason.

Surely tptb had Kirk's shirt get ripped off so often to add to the sex appeal.
I'm fine with Spock getting his kit off too, but really, I find Kirk more physically attractive.

    Ah, so true! :)

I read a lot of fan fiction, and I find it interesting to notice what sorts of assumptions the authors of fan fiction make or what character qualities they choose to emphasize.

For example, in spite of Spock's being Vulcan, a lot of fan fiction authors assume that Spock would be MORE emotionally available than a human, not less. Why? Because Spock can do mind melds. We can only ever know what a human thinks or feels about us by what that person says or does, but Spock could take you into his mind and show you what he thinks or feels. Judging by the fan fiction, a lot of people long for that. ;)

And the whole "minds locked together" and "parted from me but never parted" thing makes a lot of fan fiction authors assume that a Vulcan's spouse would be in constant telepathic contact with that person. Assumptions as to the nature of that contact vary from "could tell if he was alive or dead" to "could talk mentally as clearly as if aloud." Again, those people are assuming greater rapport with the Vulcan than they could ever find with a human.

The thing I probably see most often, though, when fan fiction authors fantasize about Spock, is the desire to soothe his loneliness and to diminish his alienation by accepting him in a way that this child of two worlds isn't accepted on Vulcan and rarely finds even on the Enterprise. They want to assure him that he's perfect exactly as he is, that he doesn't need to be more Vulcan OR more human, that both T'Pau and McCoy are wrong, and he need make no changes in himself. People want to take care of Spock, want to give him a home where he's fully accepted exactly as he is.

Thinking that women's attraction to Spock is about his aloofness misses a huge amount of what drives this phenomenon. Judging by the fan fiction, that's not even in the top ten. ;)

Interesting. I haven't read much fanfic. Though I have to admit, the mind meld thing does sound kind of hot. ^_^

Yes, this. Well said. I feel like a lot of the characters don't seem to appreciate him as much as they should. Now, if I was on the ship, I'd appreciate him plenty. ^_^

Some of it is dreck, of course, but some of it is surprisingly good. There are a lot of fan-written stories that are better than many of the Season 3 episodes... :p Some fan fiction is just adventures, as if they were new episodes, some is relationship fiction, and some is porn.

If you feel like reading some Star Trek fan fiction, two sites to try include Fan Fiction.net and Archive of Our Own. (I've linked to the TOS sections, though the sites include sections for nearly any fandom.) (I should also mention that both sites have customizable filters that allow the user to filter out any erotica on the site, if you don't want to see that. Or if you want to see nothing but erotica, you can set the filters for that.)

Doesn't it, though? Imagine being able to walk around in Spock's mind and see what's there. Spock's mind! What an amazing experience that would have to be.

    *smile* Thanks!

I hear you! :) Yep, there are a lot of us lined up and ready to appreciate the hell out of the guy.

*grin* Yeah, Nureintier and I are a dangerous combination. :)

I'm assuming that make-up is illogical, but I guess if wearing it were a Vulcan custom, Spock would manage to rationalize it for himself somehow. ;)

You're right that standards of beauty are different now; for example, Shatner DID have chest hair, but they made him shave it off whenever he was going to appear without his shirt, because they thought the smooth look was more attractive or more heroic or something.

I have nothing against Kirk -- you couldn't have TOS without him, and I thought Shatner did a great job with the role. I don't mind it when he takes his shirt off, but it doesn't do a lot for me, either. And that's okay; there are plenty of women who have a crush on Kirk; the man certainly doesn't lack for admirers.

In 1969, when I first saw Star Trek, my mother had a crush on Kirk, and I had one on Spock. Since I was eleven at the time, my mother told me that I'd "grow out of" having a crush on Spock and learn to appreciate Kirk. I appreciate Kirk just fine as a character, but as a crush object, it's still Spock for me. It's been a lot of years since 1969, so I think maybe I'm not gonna grow out of this one.

Yes, thanks, I will check some out. I mean, I've read Star Wars and Farscape fanfic years ago but not much in the way of Trek for some reason. I think it's because there are so many movies and episodes that I forget what happened in most of them, and I just go back and re-watch stuff again instead. I read the official books sometimes also.

Thats unfair. He was being creepy in that episode.
At least give us the Medusean or Spore episode where he wasn't being a meglomaniac god-like creature.

I like EVERYONE without their shirt on, especially when they don't have their shirts on together :adore:

I'm kinda relieved I don't have to fight you all for Kirk though.

*smile* Nice photo. I wonder, though, how they managed to get Spock's yellow-green make-up on his chest without getting his chest hair all gunked up. There must be some secret known to the pros. :)

You can fight my mother for Kirk, just so you don't feel left out. ;) She's 80, so it should be easy to take her. :)

    I agree with this.

Pics from that part of that episode do improve this thread, I must say.

I imagine it depends on the type of makeup stuff they used.

[*Thinks about Spock's chest hair for a while*]

Oh I don't mind sharing Kirk when it comes down to it.. I will only fight those who want exclusive rights.

I mean if you look very closely at this photo you will see that there is enough of him to go around, he's not going to get worn out or used up.

I don't actually like chest hair, though of course it wouldn't bother me IRL because what are ya gonna do? People have what they have. However for the purposes of objectifying fictional characters I can be a totally shallow pervert and discard the hirsute without any guilt.

But here's my favorite pic of Spock's chest hair for those that like Spock Pie :)

I don't have a feeling one way or the other about hair in general really, but I don't dislike it on Spock. [shrugs] You can have Kirk, then. His is shaved.

    [*scrolls back up to Spock*]

If we're talking about pettable hair, it's the eyebrows that I really want to pet, rather than the chest hair. They're so CUTE! :vulcan:

Pointy eyebrows.. pointy sideburns.. pointy ears..

All of this makes me think of other pointy things.

    lol.
The eyebrows. Hmm. They're cool and all, but not a favorite part of Spock for me.

Even before we started having this conversation, I'd spent more time than I should probably tell you about, thinking about tracing them with one finger.

I also really want to caress the ears. *sigh*

I can agree about the ears. I can understand the choice to make his eyebrows pointy, I just don't think they are precisely attractive. (This is probably some kind of blasphemy, sorry, lol).

I think that Kirk pic clears up any misconception that TOS Kirk was "flabby".
Anybody got shirtless pics of the rest of the guys. I'd especially like to see McCoy :P
