I mostly agree, but then, there is always the chance that SW7 will suck targ balls. Whatever story they come up with, it'll be a challenge to make a new movie properly epic without undoing the victory of the Battle of Endor or introducing a generic even bigger threat!, both of which could feel quite cheap. One reason the Thrawn trilogy works so well is that the stakes are gradually raised, via the Katana Fleet and new clones, both introduced in the second volume, but that'd be a hard trick to pull off in a new movie that, post-prequels, people will bring a definite "let's see what you've got" attitude towards. And a merely "meh" SW7 could seriously tarnish the brand, erasing the luster that Lucas' (apparent) recusal has conferred.

In short, let's see what SW7 is like before panicking. But I do agree that this puts added pressure on Trek XII to deliver.

Please please NO. So many great small stories there, so much world building you could do. Can we, for once, not save the galaxy?

    Amen!

Though Insurrection tried going that route and sucked major ass.

Just because it's a small story doesn't mean it has to be a bloated television episode :D

I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. When reviving a franchise, the temptation to ENDANGER EVERYTHING seems to be pretty strong. See: Temporal Cold War, Nero, Clu, Prometheus...

I'm so sick of saving the galaxy. I find so much of treklit ridiculous because of this.

And with Star Wars you can just tell the story of a Jedi and his training and struggles, set it somewhere very interesting you may use in the next movie.

If Luke et al do get recast, then angry Star Wars fans will be blaming Star Trek for setting a bad example. ;)

The Star Wars movies will be made for casual fans who don't remember what the Battle of Endor was. And they won't have anything to do with the Thrawn novels, they will be new stories.

You keep making the mistake of assuming that Star Wars is as unknown and held with as little regard in the public consciousness as Star Trek is. It's not. Even the "casual fans" know what the Battle of Endor was.

If you don't raise the stakes for a movie, you get a very boring plot like Star Trek Insurrection.

    Many people would reject that.

They're not really Care Bears. They roast people over fires and eat them.

I didn't mean they'd know the name of the battle specifically. That's not important. But you mention the battle at the end of ROTJ, the one with the fuzzy teddy bears, and I guarantee you most people would instantly know what you're talking about.

If they don't know this something is wrong with their education.

And yeah, general public type people (lol) don't know the word "Endor" or Tatooine for that matter. But they remember broad story elements and names of characters.
