    evidence for:

-Admiral Marcus saying a war with the klingons is coming (a foreshadow if ever there was one)

-Praxis blown up/Qo'noS a contaminated wasteland (due to neros fastfowarding everything. klingons using neros tech to overmine so Praxis was destroyed 30 years early so klingons more desperate/war like possibly leading to a war far earlier. Notice some are saying it wasnt meant to be Praxis but you think they do stuff like that without good reason? esp with uber trek fan Orci writing)

-cameo in STID felt like just a taster. the prelude to something bigger..(and they were cut out of ST09 - its like they itching to use them as main villains but holding back)

-they havent been the main villains since VI in 1991. and although they featured in all the original cast films (ok II was just flight simulator) they were only the proper main villains in III and VI (in V they were playing second to Sybok), and with the TNG movies only featured in Generations as a secondary villain to Soran.

-theres yet to be a big Federation armada vs klingon armada battle scene in any movie

-along with Khan, they are the most well known of trek villains(actually even more than Khan) so we get romulans in 1, Khan in 2...that probably means klingons in 3

-next film is due 2016 - what better way to celebrate Treks 50th anniversary than an epic war film with the klingons (similar to VI on the 25th anniversary - plus it will be the 25th anniversary of VI in 2016!)

-a while back (last year maybe) i watched an interview with Nimoy where he said the last time he saw Roddenberry it was to discuss Trek VI and he said GR liked the script very much but said he would like to see one thing explored that no Trek had ever touched upon before - the origins of the klingons - why they were the way they were, why so angry, what caused them to go down that route and become a ferocious warrior race, what happened. Nimoy said he thought it was a great idea and he and Meyer went away and tried to interject some explanations in the movie but they couldn’t figure out how to in the context of the story that needed to be told so it didn’t happen. but for the next film maybe they'll do what GR wanted to see and what (to my knowledge) has yet to be explored (even in TNG) - the origins of the klingons (via flashback and explanation from various characters against the backdrop of a story of an epic klingon/federation conflict complete with some kind of mcguffin)

-Avatar delved deeply into an alien race and its culture - and the sequel will be out xmas 2016 same year as ST3, so its possible the ST3 might go that way with the klingons (home planet, their culture etc). after all when a film is as big as Avatar (or star wars or any genre defining blockbuster) theres usually similaly themed movies that follow and ride the wave (plus Uhura is Avatar woman)

then again a borg movie would be way cool;)

A story about "exploring strange new worlds". It is something that has been sorely lacking in the feature film franchise since 1982.

War with the Klingons? Not really interested.

I don't see why we can't have both. A wider conflict with the Klingons being merely the backdrop for the main story.

    Please, no. Something new, different.

Being the 50th anniversary, a couple of cameos is okay, but let's see what's out there.

And as I've said before, STID ended on an optimistic note for the primary purpose of Starfleet. So why make Marcus, who was a villain, ultimately right?

    Not wars.

I'd rather see a story about "exploring strange new worlds".

TOS had many interesting stories, involving conflicts and problems and a compelling story with human themes and values consistent with Gene Roddenberry's optimistic vision.

It is what I want to see.

It is quite possible to mention (and even show) a Federation-Klingon war happening and the Enterprise being unable to join because they are in the deep of deep space. Instead they are less excitedly to begin an exploration of a new world where they end up in a situation that they underestimated. It could be something important for the war, but has no fighting and has a focus on a different central player, not the Klingons. Something like Errand of Mercy without the magic, or ENT: Marauders without being terrible. I prefer not to give examples, because I am always wishing for things Star Trek has tried and failed, but there's plenty of genuine exploration you can do under the backdrop of a war waged far away, both related to the war and not.

I'm not saying I want a Klingon war, but as much as I share the sentiment that I prefer an exploration story with more journey less general action, having a war in itself doesn't dictate whether that will happen. And there is a set up for one in STID, so I suspect the set up will be used for something – whether we will avert a war or be in one, or something completely different, I can't tell, but the Klingons will probably get a mention in that context.

What I do know is that I want to see something that actually takes you on a journey, exploring perhaps a planet, culture, society, cultures perhaps, and that's actually worth seeing. The Nibiru sequence in STID does fulfil that for me in a sense – length aside, of course. Even if it is not strange enough, but I prefer simple, and there can be strangeness in simplicity too. And the veil of the Klingon war can actually be the strange thing, but we go into the "been there, done that badly" category. :)

But most of all I prefer to be surprised, I am not particularly dying to see the things that I and others can predict or imagine. Like with Khan.

It could totally rock. Revisiting Organia could be a good start. They could completely redo the way Organia looks and it wouldn't really break canon, since they were all an illusion to begin with.
Without being overly critical of that particular episode, it is dated. The idea of the three way power struggle isn't old - all of the other factions in the known galaxy are not nearly as powerful. It's the cold war analogy that is old. I appreciate the optimism of the 60's show, but I think Star Trek is just overall an optimistic show and that it doesn't need to emphasize it in this way.

no Borg please. I think that they and the Dominion are perfect TNG era villains and need to stay there. Besides, they are recent enough that there isn't a need to revisit them.

Meh. The Klingons aren't that interesting, anyway. I agree it should be something new. Leave the war for next time. This is Star Trek, not Star Wars.

    No. Just no.

Let the third film be about something more than flashy special effects, actually have the crew explore--they're on a five-year mission into the unknown, surely there is more to see and do that fight the Klingons yet again.

Have the crew mature and go about the job they would've all signed up to be a part of.

Not really. They explained the ridges, but that's not even remotely the same thing as the origin of the aggressive tendencies of the Klingons. :)

I wouldn't say that they explained anything. More like they proved why prequels are terrible ideas. They probably spent a couple of days sucking on the stupid stick before writing that episode, and probably followed it up by drinking bleach and wrecking their cars into fountains.

Exactly. The TNG films really went down the generic cliche sci-fi action path and this continued into 09 and ITD. After a while the movies ceased to be Star Trek in some fundamental ways. A Klingon War story would just turn into 2 hours of computer generated destruction porn, and the movie industry is drowning us in that right now. Star Trek can and should be much more than that.

Eh, Trek can and has been so many things over the decades, "not real Star Trek" holds no weight with me at all. Ridiculous as it sounds now, back in the 80's there were fans who refused to accept the animated series or classic movies as true extensions of TOS. How many different incarnations of Trek have we seen since then? How many war stories?

I wouldn't say Generations, Insurrection or Nemesis were cliché sci-fi action films.
