[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaoLU6zKaws[/yt] EDIT: I know, I know, this isn't Kenny G. But work with me.
What?! No!! That isn't how I remembered it! Some creepy guy (Chak looked creepy in that "makeup") shows up and tries to tell Jaffen's girl she belongs with him. That there is this large conspiracy where Janeway and her crew were brainwashed. Jaffen was only trying to protect her from a wacky alien looking for workers. He did work with her to find out the truth and help save her butt in the end. I also am Pro-Kashyk (Mmmmm bad boys ) and Pro-Sullivan (Mmmmm programmable) It is no secret Jaffen, even over Chak.
It's not an absolute, but if Janeway excludes men because of low rank, then surely she INCLUDES men because of high rank. I'm not suggesting that rank is a reason to push a man into a closet for seven minutes of heaven just because of the pips on his collar suggest that he is a go-er, but it does mean that they pass the first round of exclusions with out having to fill out any forms and she would have to accept a date with any man that commands a starship if he asks. Ransom had a narrow window there.
But that is the bare bones reality of the situation aboard Voyager. Janeway had every chance week after week to prove that she was anything else otherwise, but she just couldn't get hot under the collar about almost everyone. You do know what asexual means?
I'm not seeing this asexual argument at all, unless this is just some dig at the fact that she doesn't have a giant rack. And she was in love. She was engaged. Along with the occasional fling. They were usually lousy, though, save for a couple.
Asexual means that she isn't interested in sex or looking for a sexual parter(s). She was pushing 40 and engaged to a guy she's known since she was 10(Jeri Taylor novel reference) which sounds like a safety more than a love connection, and falling in love badly is just one reason not to want to fall in love again. It's got nothing to do with what she looks like.
I think its funny that people are arguing over this again. "If Janeway isn't having sex every 30 minutes, then she's asexual." which has a pejorative connotation. But as froot has already mentioned... at the start of Voyager, Janeway was already engaged and determined she WOULD get their crew back home again. She wasn't going to throw over Mark that easily. JANEWAY: Home is home. It’s where we belong. GATH: Couldn’t you create a new home here, with us? Can you imagine a more delightful place to live, where you could pass your time extracting pleasure from every moment. I promise you, you and I have many such moments to explore. JANEWAY: Yes, but for how long? I’ve seen how quickly you get tired of your pleasures. All that interests you is what’s new and unexplored. After a day or two it becomes commonplace. GATH: Yes? JANEWAY: We prefer permanence. The reward of relationships that endure and grow deeper with the passing of time. GATH: You would loose those notions if you stayed with us. JANEWAY: You may be right. And that’s why we have to leave. To disrespect Janeway's fidelity to Mark in her first 2 years in the DQ, is to disrespect Sisko's fidelity to the memory of his wife HIS first few years on DS9. Neither were asexual, they were simply celibate and yes, there's a difference. Oh... and Vas is right, Jaffen WASN'T a bad choice. Respecting Mark is one thing. Becoming worried about what he'll do to her dog if he suspects she is disrespecting him is another thing entirely. Kathryn Janeway cannot stand bullies. She has no choice but to cheat on him often and well.
