Kong was a great movie but it could lose a half hour of fat in it or so. SR was of course a fault from the start with the completely out of character additions both in character development and the mythos.

That's debatable really, and we've done that dance to death on this board really as is this:

Again debatable, not much going into it but there are a lot of folks on this board who don't agree with your view.

^That's true. I loved Superman Returns, and I still do. I own the film on both basic DVD and the special edition, just because I prefer fullscreen and the special edition was widescreen, so I had to get them both (the Best Buy woman even said, "Do you really have to have both?" and I responded with, "FUCK YEAH WOMAN! NOW CHARGE THOSE MOTHAFUCKAS!!!!").

I pretty much just respond that way to everyone.

Well - one thing will be kinda important no matter what - do they assume that some of the events with Lois' kid in SR happened or just pretend it never did and go on?

What about a Superman movie without Lois? Is that possible?

Why not, if it's a reboot? Batman Begins and The Dark Knight ignored key events in the preceding films.

It's not an identical scenario for the Superman franchise, though. I think Brandon Routh is too good to throw overboard, so WB should reboot with him in the lead once more.

    Gotta keep Lois.

A reboot with the same actor as the last film. That's more confusing than rebooting with all new actors.

I know it sounds risky; I can't think of another movie series that has started over without replacing the lead actor. I hope WB can find a novel solution to the problem of Superman's son without getting rid of Brandon Routh or director Bryan Singer.

Well I think at this point Bryan Singer is at least gone. Jeff Robinov made that pretty clear. It pains me to say it, but that seems like the case.

I hope Brandon Routh stays on. I don't want another twenty year search for the next Superman.

It almost happened with Judi Dench staying on as M in the Daniel Craig Bond movies, having played the role opposite Pierce Brosnan for four movies. Added to which, in Goldeneye, she was clearly meeting Brosnan's veteran 007 for the first time (as M, at least), while in Casino Royale she was the experienced boss meeting Craig's rookie agent.

Not quite the same as rebooting the series while retaining the lead, but given that M is a fairly prominent feature of the Bond series, it does show that mainstream audiences don't really care that much about such inter-series continuity as the rest of us.

The advantage of Routh's low profile before and after Superman Returns is that audiences probably won't be thinking 'Oh, why is Routh back?'. They'll just see Superman onscreen, end of story.

They can just do what they did with Peter Parker's daughter and have the kid kidnapped and quickly forgotten about.
