    Too good looking.

A few years back I saw Alfred Molina with a shaved head, he was the spitting image of the 50s Luthor and the Byrne Era Luthor.

^John Shea and Michael Rosenbaum haven't exactly been smacked with the ugly stick either. I think Billy would be an excellent Lex.

The 3-day opening for Man of Steel is estimated at $113 million, setting a new record for a June opening. With the Thursday night numbers included, it's made an estimated $125 million. The audience was 56% male, compared to 61% male for Iron Man 3.

Actually, he probably would have made a good Superman back in the day. He was properly heroic as the Phantom.

Looks like this version should have legs for a decent box office run.

OMG. I really like that. Like, wow. I loved Spacey as Luthor, but Billy Zane... I can see him as the corporate monster genius billionaire... Wow.

And Byrne's Luthor, I agree, is also the best.

The time when Billy Zane might have been cast as Lex Luthor is long gone.

^It's not like they need to get a big name in the role to put bums on seats though, is it? Michael Shannon isn't a box-office draw, nor is Kevin Costner the big name he once was. Zane only really had two big hits in his career, Dead Calm and (obviously) Titanic and in neither of those was he the major attraction.

Not that I think he'll play LL in MOS2 but I think they'll cast who they want in the role, regardless of that actor's box-office friendliness.

They'll either cast a big name or an interesting character actor whose work is currently winning plaudits.

I hear what you are saying that Superman is relatively star proof--as in they don't need a star to sell it. But, I could see them using a "big name" for the role of Luthor. Be it someone with real acting chops, like Shannon, or a big name. I think it would be to good of a PR thing for Warner's to pass up.

Like Brando as Jor El. Or Crowe as Jor El.

    It could go either way.

That said, the box office success will give the team enough cred to make WB's give them freedom of casting.

I agree with both of you. The casting for MOS was excellent, as it was for Nolan's Batman trilogy. And what was a lot of fun with both MOS and the Batmovies was that for the most part, nobody saw the casting coming. Well, Bale had been a bit of a fanfave for some time before BB, while Henry's name had been bubbling under, owing to his auditions for Returns, Casino Royale etc. But neither were shoo-ins by any means.

My best bet is still, whether it's acclaimed character actor or big-name draw, it'll be someone who'll surprise us. I don't see them going 'Oh, let's get Johnny Depp, cos he's hot, or let's get Chris Cooper, cos he was great as the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-man 2.'

They need to be concerned with the abilities and reputation of the actor rather than with his perceived resemblance to one or more of the ways Luthor has been drawn in the comics. Anyone can shave their head.

Which I think they did that with MOS. And will continue to do so. Because it makes the most sense.
