So, Reddit failed me, downvoted without cause, and no reply given... I Really want to continue with DS9, or simply Dr. Bashir, in book form. I honestly have no idea where to start, and I know that there are almost as many trek novels out there as there are fans... Does anyone have any hints on where I should begin, where I should start my Trek Book adventures? Thanks!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine_relaunch You could, I suppose, pick up with the Typhon Pact books, but I'd read them all...
would it be detrimental if I started with the Typhon Pact and then read the rest, or should I do it all in a specific order?
I'd say theres some good Bashir stuff in the earlier Relaunch stuff. And there's amazing DS9 stuff in general. I'd read them all if I were you.
Alrighty! I guess that's what I'll do... So would you too recommend the order on the wiki page above, starting with "The Lives of Dax"
From (fallible) memory I'd say you could read Lives of Dax and A Stitch In Time anytime and start with N Vector, but it's your call.
To continue the saga of DSN and Bashir, I'd say read the DSN Relaunch in the editorially-intended order. In later years, the DSN novels and other series began to mix a bit under newer headings, so I'd include them. Bolded are books with a special Bashir focus. To wit: The Lives of Dax ed. Marco Palmieri A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson ("Elim Garak") Avatar, Book One by S.D. Perry Avatar, Book Two by S.D. Perry Section 31: Abyss by Jeffrey Lang and David Weddle (former DSN staff writer) Gateways: Demons of Air and Darkness by Keith R.A. DeCandido "Horn and Ivory," from Gateways: What Lay Beyond, by Keith R.A. DeCandido Twilight (Mission: Gamma, Book I) by David R. George III (former VOY freelance writer) This Gray Spirit (Mission: Gamma, Book II) by Heather Jarman Cathedral (Mission: Gamma, Book III) by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels Lesser Evil (Mission: Gamma, Book IV) by Robert Simpson Rising Son by S.D. Perry The Left Hand of Destiny, Book One by J.G. Herzler ("Martok") and Jeffrey Lang The Left Hand of Destiny, Book Two by J.G. Herzler and Jeffrey Lang Unity by S.D. Perry Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Vol. I Cardassia: The Lotus Flower by Una McCormack Andor: Paradigm by Heather Jarman Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Vol. II Trill: Unjoined by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels Bajor: Fragments and Omens by J. Noah Kym Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Vol. III Ferenginar: Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed by Keith R.A. DeCandido The Dominion: Olympus Descending by David R. George III Warpath by David Mack (former DSN freelance writer) Fearful Symmetry by Olivia Woods The Soul Key by Olivia Woods The Never-Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack Destiny by David Mack (big TNG/DSN/VOY/ENT crossover; placing it here rather than after Soul Key is arbitrary but works)Gods of Night Mere Mortals Lost Souls A Singular Destiny by Keith R.A. DeCandido (more a cross-series novel, but heavy DSN supporting characters element) Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game by David Mack Typhon Pact: Rough Beasts of Empire by David R. George III Typhon Pact: Paths of Disharmony by Dayton Ward (technically probably more of a TNG novel, but has a major DSN "guest star" and carries a major DSN arc forward) Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night by David R. George III Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn by David R. George III Typhon Pact: Brinkmanship by Una McComack (evenly TNG and DSN)
I'd fully back Sci's list, it can be worth reading other novels that are set at the same time as then all of Trek becomes one big story.
If you're curious about how it all fits together, my signature contains a giant flowchart that pieces it all together. Don't feel like you have to read anything in particular, though - that list Sci posted is going to be brilliant reading start to finish even if you don't add anything else to it. Be aware also that a lot of those books are collected in Twist Of Faith and These Haunted Seas, two bigger omnibus editions. Oh, and you should also probably know that there's a huge time-jump before Destiny, where the DS9 narrative skips several years. There was some editorial changeover and it's not the smoothest of transitions. However: all the stories before are fantastic, and all the stories after are fantastic, and it's absolutely worth the journey. It'll just be better if you know to expect it going in.
See my comment in the list. Yeah, it may be kind of arbitrary, but there's really no good reason to place it anywhere else. (And I think you should read TNES before Destiny.)
So I am slowly making my way through the Typhon Pact books . . . but I am wondering (hoping) that Bashir's Section 31 storyline is picked up later.
Don't worry, the Section 31 plotline is continued in Plagues of Night and Raise the Dawn, which essentially build on the plots of all previous books in the series.
Bashir (and Ezri) has a small but critical role in A Burning House, which is set during the relaunch period.
It was when Rodek was having flash backs about being Kurn - he went to DS9 to seek help from Bashir not knowing that he had performed the initial memory operation and crest altering.
DS9 continues to be my absolute favorite major ongoing Trek Series in Literary Form. Vanguard supplanted Klingon Empire (when it died prematurely) as well as Corps of Engineers (when it was halted, hopefully one day to be resumed) as my favorite Literature Only series. Both featuring Space stations... Hmm.
Did they mention him in A Singular Destiny? I know the IKS Gorkon scenes gave a brief update on some of the characters from the series, but I can't remember if he was mentioned.
