Keep in mind the original story for the Ghostbusters took place in the future, had the Ghostbusters going to other planes of existence and Ecto-1 being some-sort of demon car or something like that and people pretty much has to tell him, "It's 1984, there's no way we can make any of these things happen on the big-screen."

Honestly if they handle it like some the fan productions and do Ghostbusters:city and Ghostbusters: other city I don't think its outside the realms of possibility, in fact it could be a good way to have a t.v series and a film series without having to recast or pay over budget for a film actor to do a weekly series. Do I think there is any basis for what he is saying, no. But still...

The problem with "Best to just cast the best people for the roles, regardless of race" is how do find them? Let's say there's a pool of 10,000 potential people (including many unknowns who are doing small YouTube or local theater). If the "known" actors are mostly white people (and probably number 500 or less), but there are 1000 unknown minorities who are equally or more talented....who's going to be most likely looked at, let alone cast.

And that's ignoring all the the overseas talent (especially comedic).

Also, being post 80's...there has GOT to be an intern involved! (With interns not so common back then). Then you can have a really young person hooked up with an older group. Oh -- and speaking of that...why not AGE diversity too. It'd be a riot to see a reckless senior citizen willing to take risks, and/or feel an attachment to the ghosts, because they know they will join them sometime soon.

    Ghostbusters: Diversity.
Kinda surprised that it took this long for them to finally say, 'reboot.' I'd rather have a rebooted series than live another 30 years of waiting for more/new Ghostbusters. Sheesh.
At least the animated series The Real Ghostbusters has aged well... it is an excellent way to pass the time in the meantime. And yes, I also collect spores, molds and fungus (print is dead).

I like the idea of a female team. But I'd really love for it to be a semi-sequel and have at least some of the original characters (probably just Ray and Winston at this point) show up to some extent. Maybe they just run the business side of things and have retired from busting ghosts. Maybe have the old equipment show up as easter eggs since the proton pack would have been improved over the years. Have it be the new team's story, but just acknowledged that the originals still happened.

If not that, just have Slimer show up. I can forgive anything as long as he appears.

I'm hoping for a few easter eggs as well. Still, I love this idea of an all female team, and I hope it's just as smart and funny as the original (which is likely, considering who is on the writing team).

Yeah, I'm one of those who's shouted loudest about not making a new Ghostbusters movie, but i'll also admit that I'm very excited about this latest development. I only ask for 4 things:

    1. That it's funny
    2. That it's sometimes scary (or even scarier than the video game!)
    3. That it retains the classic sound effects and rubber-banding proton stream
    4. That there's a sequel connection to the previous movies. If the writers also take up Murray's suggestion that Winston play a larger role than before, then let's do it. (But honestly, #4 is the least of my desires here)

As for the all-female team, nobody ever complained about an all-male team being gimmicky, so bring on the ladies. And if Annie Potts can come back in some fashion, all the better.

I think they should just split the difference. Two men and two women. An all-female Ghostbuster teams guarantees Ghostbusters will not be a successful franchise again. I've been a Paul Feig fan for a long time, since Freaks and Geeks (my favorite show and still the best thing him and Judd Apatow have ever done) but I think he's making a mistake here. You don't turn something like Ghostbusters into a chick flick.

Re: Aykroyd Comments on Murray, Ghostbusters 3! Working on Script w/Ra

Does an all-female team strike anyone else as pandering a bit? I mean it *almost* sounds like the premise for a porno or something. Or at the very least very much a fetish-like concept.

In the current (now canceled) comic there was a time when the Ghostbusters were trapped in another dimension by ghosts (Humanbusters?) and as a result Walter Peck (overseeing the new branch of government controlling the Ghostbusters at city employees/contractors) enlists Janine, a goth-chick working in Ray's occult book store and an FBI chick the Ghostbusters worked with in an earlier story arc to be the new Ghostbusters. And along with it insists they wear shorts for their uniforms and do photo-shoots and the like to take advantage of the sex-appeal of the women for better PR for the Ghostbusters. (Or something along those lines.) The women are overseen by a man arrested in another arc when his attempt to run a competing ghost-busting service goes awry, he's let-go to oversee the women.

That's kind of what I see this as. That the producers of this movie have the same motivations as Peck in this comic storyline. It's not that female Ghostbusters will provide something interesting or different to do with the story but will bring "sex appeal" to the movie to get people more intersted in it.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe they have good, clean, intentions for an all-female cast of leads and they won't use sex appeal at all for the movie (but, come-on) and they have an interesting way to do the story centered around these women that justifies the characters having to be women rather than men.

But, from my experience, Hollywood doesn't have too great a track-record when it comes to an all-female cast without resorting to cliches, sex appeal or just flat-out pandering to a male audience.

Not saying an all-female cast can't work, just that I don't trust Hollywood to do it right. I just don't think there's anything about the story in their mind that means the characters have to be women. Or that they'll write the characters neutral enough that a woman can fit in the role but not stand out as trying too hard to make her character seem neutral/like a believable woman on the cutting edge of paranormal research and technological development.

I don't have enough trust in Hollywood that they can do it. It remains to be seen, as this goes forward maybe we'll get a better idea (for better or worse) why this particular route. Casting more than anything else should really show where their goals lie. (If they hire three young, beautiful, women then we know their intentions. If they hire three middle-aged attractive, or even not-conventionally attractive, women we know they have more noble goals in mind.)

Again not saying it can't be done, that it shouldn't be done or that there shouldn't be female leads in any Ghostbusters movie (I think making them *all* female goes to far. I don't see why not a male/female mix) just that I don't trust that Hollywood has the noblest of intentions here and they're going more of sex appeal, pandering, or just generally using women for the roles to appeal to a male audience. It's Hollywood, afterall.

As if only guys enjoyed the original Ghostbusters? The franchise has a ton of female fans. Maybe not as much as men sure, but men don't have a monopoly at cons or purchasing merchandise or even anniversary screenings. The movie may star mostly men, but it's not strictly a guy-flick, either. This ain't the Expendables, people. Because humor can transcend gender.

I really don't care about anything except that I enjoy the new film enough to want to rewatch it, something that is still true for the first film, but never so much for the second.

Just because the team is all women doesn't mean it's going to be a "chick flick". Having the team be all male didn't lead to a constant stream of bare breasted women, and fart jokes, did it? No? Well, then don't create stereotypes for an all female cast.

What the hell's wrong with "chick flicks" anyway? Women go and see testosterone fueled movies, suddenly guys can't deal with something a majority of women might like? Please.

Also, to address another point, why would it be pandering, Trekker? Surely you don't believe that just because they're women that they're getting the role as a token gesture. That would imply you believe that female actors can't do the same roles as male actors and make it work, that they have to have it handed to them in an effort to "pander" to other women. I'd hope you don't mean it that way.

While I'm fine with the *idea* of an all female Ghostbusters movie, the thing that would bother me is that I don't exactly trust Hollywood not to just treat it as a cheap gimmick or novelty. Mind you I wouldn't exactly expect an all male one to be terribly good either.

The franchise is based on 4 guys who bust ghosts. If it were 4 women whom had busted ghosts in the 1980s and had launched a franchise then cool. But I'm not interested in female versions of franchises that originally starred a predominately male cast. Star Trek, The Equalizer, The A-Team didn't recast the male roles as women. So I do think this is pandering to a growing female audience. Good for them. But go find your own franchise first and see how that works because I think they're gonna lose the male audience at the very least because many of us are expecting a Bridesmaids, Girl Power and Sex in the City appealing to women type of movie. Unfortunately there's not much inbetween girl comedy and male movies that feature women in short skirts. There is still not yet a successful female comic book movie out there and I think this movie is going to fall on it's frickin ass and kill it for another two decades.

Re: Aykroyd Comments on Murray, Ghostbusters 3! Working on Script w/Ra

I don't mean it that way. On one note, by "pander" I mean it more as the studio saying, "See! We give equal-sized roles to women too!" in order to shrug off the perceived sausage-fest in Hollywood. On another note I don't mean pandering to women but pandering to men on a "porno" level. (See: The GB comic example I gave, where Walter Peck used a trio of female Ghostbusters' sex appeal to gain support for the new city service.)

See also: The Asylum mock-buster version of The Expendables III. Now, granted, this is The Asylum so the bar for them is very, very low but it goes along with my point. Their "mockbuster" put together a team of female prisoners for a special-ops mission. Naturally, from the trailer at least, the movie drew upon the sex appeal of the female cast to potentially attract viewers.

Women are very capable of taking on roles designed for men and performing in roles that don't fit the typical female archetype.

I just don't trust Hollywood to see it that way or to act that way. I *highly* doubt that we'll see a movie from this where the women are not used in a degrading manner in some fashion or another.
