A gracious offer, Allanon, but unfortunately, your post falls under the description of "soliciting BBS members: posting to sell or endorse a product or web site," which is not permitted under the TrekBBS rules. I've edited your post to remove the reference.

Oops, sorry my bad Ptrope. I figured it was free and a service to the Trek community. I don't make any money off the site and I don't charge anybody anything. Free bandwith since I have extra.

It's such a shame seeing all this fine art just go bye bye since they're in old postings/moved webhosts, etc.

If a member posts their own original art, may I ask them if I can add their art to my picture gallery? And if yes, would you prefer I send a single pm to them or post in their picture thread? I just like collecting ST pictures of any kind...

I agree about the unfortunate unavailability of the past works; I'm going to make it my project this week to compile the entries I have (not all, but the majority from the last year) and add them to the "Can I Suggest an Art Contest" thread, along with the names of the past winners.

EDIT:Just for folks' edification and entertainment, I've started compiling the previous entries for the monthly challenges here (it made as much sense as anywhere, since to know what to suggest, it helps to see what has been done ;)). If you were an entrant for which I have no artwork, feel free to contact me, and I'll update the pages.

Q: Could I post up a bunch of links for free tutorials and have the thread to be pinned?

The best place to post those is in the already-pinned Inspiration & Information thread at the top of this forum. Looking forward to the links!

I just had a look at the FAQ and the Inspiration & Information threads. There's something I've been wondering, and I don't think it's been answered in either thread. Plus I didn't want to open an extra thread just for that on subject alone.

Anyway, my question is this. I have a pencil drawing I did of a Star Trek character, Dukat. In other words, the drawing itself is my original creation (I'm not using any copyrighted screenshots or the like) but the character is not.

What happens if I post a work like this on my own website? I don't mean to sell it or use it to sell or advertise things (other than my own skills, that is), just to show it, really. Could this be a problem legally speaking? What notices (if any) would have to be included?

I'm sorry if this was covered elsewhere but I missed. I just didn't see it covered anywhere. And maybe this is even something that could go into the FAQ.

Bah. Looks like I have to wait until 100 before I can post my art. Oh well.

You'd be surprised how fast you can hit that 100 post mark.

I have a question regarding photomanips. I don't draw so great, but I do have a character who looks just like Odo with a different hair and eye and clothing color, so I did some manipulating to change the hair/eye/clothing colors. Is that not allowed to be posted as fanart even if I credit it by saying "this is a photomanipulation"?

I won't just go do it anyway, I might use it for an avatar when I can start posting one(if allowed), but I'm wondering about posting it as fanart.

There's not really a problem showing photo manipulations like that. Many people post such things here, and there's even a dedicated thread in General Trek for them. The only real problem would be if you tried to sell it.

Okay, thanks :) I would never try to claim a photomanip is my own work, I always am specific that "THIS IS A PHOTOMANIPULATION" and I don't sell anything I do anyway. I don't wanna be sued :P

    Thanks again!

I've just joined (or I thought I had, apparently I had and existing account) and found this very helpful and clear. Well done! Thank you.

Looks like PhotoBucket just put nails in their own coffin. This morning, I received an e-mail "some features" of my account have been disabled and is "restricted for 3rd party hosting" with a graphic of a speedometer with the needle pegged at 100%. They offer to let me upgrade to their Plus-500 plan for "just" $39.99 per month.

At first, I figured I had too many views and come the first of the month, the counter will reset and all will be good.

    No.

According to the Terms Of Usage, the free accounts are NOT ALLOWED to use Image Linking or 3rd Party Hosting. These are their plans:

o Plus 50 Plan: 52 GB of Storage for $59.99 / Year. The Plus 50 Plan does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting.
o Plus 100 Plan: 50 GB of Storage for $99.99 / Year. The Plus 100 Plan allows for unlimited image linking but does not allow 3rd party image hosting.
o Plus 500 Plan: 500 GB of Storage and unlimited bandwidth for $399.99 / Year. The Plus 500 Plan allows for unlimited image linking and unlimited 3rd party image hosting.

Not sure what the difference between Image Linking and 3rd Party Hosting is, but here's the other blurb I got after logging into my account:

We have noticed that you have been using Photobucket for 3rd Party Hosting. Don't worry, your photos are safe.

*What is 3rd Party Hosting? Alternatively refered to as inline linking, "hotlinking" is the action of linking to an image or object on another server. An example of hotlinking would be using an <img> tag to display a JPEG image that you uploaded to your Photobucket account so it will appear on a different website like Etsy, eBay auction listings, blogs, forum messages, etc.

So, according to that, I can't pick the Plus-100 plan at $9.99 per month and link my artwork to Trek-BBS.

Now, here's the biggest kick in the head: the date on the Terms of Usage:
Photobucket.com Terms of Use / Last revised June 28, 2017

So, I was already p***ed off at the site for all their *blinking* ads, but now I am totally done with them.

It's gotten to the point where everything has to be monetized.

There was a scam where they didn't sell a toupee--but they would charge a card for one every month "It's a system"

The toll road approach to everything.

I stick to Imgur ever since Photobucket had been closing down the free part. Works like a charm.

Anyone that ever plans to make a living with art should really have their own domain and web space with their portfolio on it.

I understand hobbyists using free emails and image hosting, but they shouldn't be used by professionals (nor aspiring professionals).

Well, I'm not sure if @Ptrope handled this particular board rule differently here, but the idea – as I understand it – is to encourage new discussion. Bumping a dead thread might be okay if a genuine new conversation arises from it. Maybe because there's a new aspect to the original topic or someone has done similar artwork and wants to share it in the same thread. It won't be closed then.

But if the new post is just a two-word comment and the original poster is long gone from the board and won't see or react to it, it's frowned upon around here. This is a discussion board and if there's no discussion to be had, because the folks have long disappeared, well then the thread is closed. And keep in mind, the thread is not deleted, it's just closed, so everyone can still look at it.

I get what you are saying that maybe the rule should be applied differently in Fan Art and maybe you are right. I was just trying to follow board rules with this one. Please remember, I'm new to this. :)
